Pioneering Regenerative Hospitality

As regeneration has recently become another buzzword of sustainability gurus, it seems important to clarify what regenerative hospitality actually means to us.

Regenerative Hospitality actively and intentionally creates the conditions for local communities and places to thrive and flourish.

Regenerative Hospitality contributes to restore natural environments, enrich local communities, and boosts mental wellness of guests through the authenticity of encounters.

Regenerative Hospitality is a journey where hospitality is not the destination, but the vehicle for regenerating oneself, communities and the nature around.

Our tagline: “Making travel a force for good by regenerating local places, communities and the surrounding environmental ecosystems while offering travelers transformational experiences”.

What do we do concretely?

We are developing micro-hospitality projects with exclusivity and low local footprint being at the core of the experience

Think about being alone with your loved ones in the midst of the most majestic landscapes, off the beaten tracks, for the most extraordinary experiences.

The village of Tizkmoudine, in South Morocco

Think about just a few houses restored in an ancient village in the midst of an oasis, abandoned by the population over half a century ago.

Think about a local community, that not so long ago had no jobs nor visitors, that is now buzzing with activities thanks to our regenerative approach: a weaving cooperative, a carpentry workshop, soon a small semi-industrial processing plant to produce date sugar, educational activities for children (in physics, foreign languages, local architecture or permaculture - the range of their interests is mind-blowing), and the oasis slowly getting back to life through a reasonable use of water and a restorative approach for the soils.

A design workshop to create the next collection - tapestry, embroidery - all using natural product from the oasis such as palm fiber

Here you are, in Tizkmoudine, south Morocco, ready for serendipitous adventures, encounters and experiences…

We use our presence (and the revenues generated) to catalyze regenerative projects co-created with local communities that follow our purpose

  1. Contribute to economic development through revenue-generating activities - hence supporting local communities towards autonomy;
  2. Empower women - who always are the real agents of change, let’s not fool ourselves…
  3. Protect cultural heritage and preserve traditional wisdom - to learn the ancient ways, more respectful of nature, and more harmonious with one another, and share them with young generations and travelers alike;
  4. Restore damaged natural ecosystems - how can we be the only species destroying the very system that sustains us for our survival?

Our methodology? Co-creation - because the approach is truly regenerative only when it is owned by the people (and just because it so obviously makes sense despite decades of top-down aid policies!).

Our model? Blended capital - a combination of revenues from hospitality, philanthropy and public aid.

Our ambition? To replicate - Everywhere. Because everywhere, there is a need to restore crumbling villages, protect traditional know-hows, regenerate a degraded nature and spur economic activity.

Launch of the regenerative program in May 2023

700’000 heures Impact is born out of the perfect combination of skills and passions

On the one side:

  • Thierry’s trailblazing experience in hospitality and growing interest to work with local communities, from Morocco to Brazil, from Cambodia to Italy. Thierry has been “pushing the boundaries or experiential travel”, and has often been described as a “visionary on a mission”.The Memory Road, an odyssey from the shores of the Atlantic to the edge of the Sahara desert in the footsteps of the Amazighs, those “free men” who have crossed the South of Morocco, epitomizes his approach.

On the road…

On the other side:

  • My passion for the emergence of a new system that ensures that no one falls short on life’s essential services while not overshooting Earth precious resources; as well as my experience of building philantropic - public - private alliances geared towards regeneration.Over the years, I have relentlessly engaged in, led and supported initiatives promoting social justice and well-being, the preservation of environment and the development of private enterprises. I did it as an investor at the European Investment Bank (EIB) , as an advisor to multilateral development banks such as The World Bank and then to the French President Emmanuel Macron , in my role as Senior Vice-President at SUEZ Group, building partnerships to improve water and waste management services in Africa, and more recently with Regenopolis for example through my collaboration with Entrepreneurial Solutions Partners, LLC (ESP) to support more and more climate entrepreneurs across the continent, with the right mix between expertise and capital.

Me in Davos 2023, articulating the notion of regeneration with urban and community resilience (not such beautiful pictures as for Thierry’s work!)

700’000 heures Impact is the story of this encounter: together, we have joined forces to coin and develop the concept of regenerative hospitality.

So where do we go next?

There are so many stories inside the 700’000 heures Impact story!

I could talk about “Heartland Stories”, our project with Nora Jaccaud , an extraordinary storyteller and video maker, creator of the Human Postcards series: our regenerative hospitality projects are deeply rooted in the land and the communities they serve. We aim to create a positive impact by acknowledging and paying a tribute to the history and traditions they are made of, with a sense of urgency to preserve ancestral knowledge.

I could talk about our “ Food Lab” with Olivier Darné, visual artist and urban beekeeper, founder of Zone Sensible and the Parti Poétique in France. We are creating a space open to the community in Skoura, with the objective to do an inventory of local plants, traditional agricultural techniques and culinary traditions, and from there, innovate - from irrigation, to conservation techniques and new recipes - as well as share best practice with small farm holders, schools and travelers alike.

The village of Tizkmoudine is where we have been operating with the support of wonderful partners and friends without whom our adventure would not be possible (thank you Morgann Lesné Alexandra Lohr Touria BENLAFQIH , Benjamin Rombaut Wissal Ben Moussa Cecilia Barradas @mohamed ait hamza).

But now, expect to see us also soon in Peru, Mexico, Rwanda, and hopefully Oman, Brazil, Senegal, Canada, France, Nepal, Mongolia over the next couple of years!

Spoiler: Come and see us in the Amazon, Northern Peru, from June 2024 onwards!

We have already started working to support and accelerate a beautiful private initiative of reforestation, protection of biodiversity and livelihood. We are calling it the Amazon Forest Lab.

The project seeks to preserve and protect the forest and its extraordinary biodiversity.
And to support livelihoods of local populations through activities such as cacao production, paper workshop and bee hives.

Why is this topic so close to my heart?

« Together, we can be the reGeneration » says Christiana Figueres . I firmly believe that we have a small window of opportunity to turn things around, to invent a new way of operating our economic system, of relating to one another and of traveling

This has been my journey for these past few years, since I have launched Regenopolis. To be part of this human chain of entrepreneurs, investors, business leaders, policymakers, indigeneous communities, cooperatives, activists that are transforming our system to be in the right relationship with nature and with one another.

I hope to be sharing this adventure with many of you, either as a partner, an investor, a facilitator, a visitor, but mostly as a fellow traveler in our regenerative journey.

Amazing news Diane congrats!!! great to see the evolution of 700000 heures and the perfect mix with Regenopolis, i've followed both projects with a lot of interest since my field of action is the rural areas in Spain or as it's horribly called "the emptied Spain" I'd love to learn from your experience and willing to co.create with you in your re-generative quest

“We are the ancestors of the generations to come and the stewards of a borrowed planet.” 🙌 This kind of experience completely transformed my life when I fell into working for VISIONS Service Adventures, and watching it change the trajectory of the lives of hundreds of teens (who are now hundreds of adults) during my 12+ years there has been one of the most hope-generating periods of time I’ve ever been part of. Love this approach, and wish you every success (and a lot of joy along the way)! 🙏
