The Power to Change the World

The Power to Change the World

Do you ever wish you had a magic wand? You know – a specially-enchanted instrument you could use to change the world for the better in a single instant? It’s a very appealing thought, isn’t it? Our legends and mythologies are full of these metaphors for creating instant change. The magician waves his wand and banishes evil from the world in a flash.

If only life were so delightfully simple!

The fact is that there are many movements today - both in terms of political parties and social organisations - whose purpose is to change the world. They all subscribe to the view that they want to make the world a better place. They represent a multitude of philosophies and beliefs. But obviously they can’t all be correct in their assumptions about what really constitutes improvement. They’re probably equally sincere in their beliefs as well and, whilst we usually try to respect their honest and earnest intentions, the results often fall short of the stated objectives. So, why is this? Why do so many of these noble efforts fail to produce the intended results? It’s largely because the world we inhabit is a highly complex structure and even the most laudable changes sometimes produce unforeseen and unintended consequences. If you have any doubts about this assertion, a quick glance through any objective history book will quickly dispel your misgivings.

When you establish peace, when you establish love, when you establish kindness right here in your own heart, you cannot act in any other way towards the outside world.

― Mimi Ikonn

Whilst the world certainly deserves our best efforts to provide the best opportunities for everyone to thrive, the burning desire to change society is often a reflection of an inner need for personal evolution. It just seems to be easier to change the world around us rather than change the internal landscape within our own hearts and minds.

And this is where the contradictions usually arise. Whilst striving to correct the imbalances within ourselves, it’s all too tempting to project our inadequacies onto the world around us in a futile attempt to manifest change in the external landscape. Perhaps this is why so many revolutions fail to deliver on their initial promise. We become so concerned about bending the world to our new vision that we forget to align our hearts and minds with the picture of perfection we’ve designed for everyone else.

Everything is consciousness. YOU are consciousness and everything around you is a reflection of your state of consciousness. When you shift your consciousness, when you change, your life changes too.

― Maria Erving

In truth, there are many worthy causes that deserve our energy and support in the pursuit of a better world. But the most significant revolution that we can launch takes place within the compass of our own hearts. Let us not forget that it’s the internal world that deserves our attention too. Perhaps that’s the best place to start when we seek to introduce change into the world. This is also the most fitting place to examine the fundamental need for change. This is the most appropriate area to scrutinise when we consider the need for improvement. Let’s change the world by starting with ourselves. Let’s make our own hearts the fertile ground that can receive the seeds of perfection.

To change the world around us, we need to change ourselves first

― Santosh Joshi

We’ve often referred to the concept that everything’s connected. It’s a very useful insight into the underlying nature of reality and a helpful reminder of the myriad connections that bind the world into a relatively cohesive unit. It implies that we are an integral part of the world. We are one of its constituent parts. What we do, what we say, what we think and what we feel all contribute to the total experience of reality. Our internal landscape cannot be separated from the world around us. Like everything else, it’s deeply connected to the world we so often seek to change. It’s worth considering that changes to our consciousness, to our behaviour and our thoughts and feelings will be reflected in the greater world that surrounds us. Yes, we still need to take practical steps to address the challenges of our modern world. But let’s identify the real underlying problems rather than simply project our own inadequacies onto the great canvas of the universe and hope that, somehow, we can find what we’re seeking in an external shift in the landscape.

Don’t try to change the world. Just change yourself. Why? Because the whole world is only relative to the eyes that are looking at it. Your world actually only exists for as long as you exist and with the death of you, includes the death of your world. Therefore, if there is no peace in your heart; you will find no peace in this world, if there is no happiness in your life; you will find no happiness anywhere around you, if you have no love in your heart; you will not find love anywhere and if you do not fly around freely inside your own soul like a bird with perfectly formed wings; then there will never be any freedom for you regardless if you are on a mountaintop removed from all attachments to all of mankind! Even the mountaintop cannot give you freedom if it is not already flying around there inside your own soul! So, I say, change yourself. Not the world.

― C. JoyBell C.

This could be the perfect moment for you to examine the imperfections within your own heart rather than the imbalances that abound in the world. If you feel inspired to be a force for change in the world, let the changes begin within your heart and mind. Your capacity for happiness and self-fulfillment cannot be found in any location beyond the boundaries of your own heart. Change the world by becoming the person that’s striving to express itself deep within you. Free yourself from the roles and masks that obscure your true identity. Liberate yourself from the illusions of your limitations and discover the power of your true potential. Let your new-found sense of empowerment flow out into the world.

If you seek to express power in the world, learn to give it away to others. If you seek love in your life, give your love freely without price or condition. And if you aspire to true greatness, then learn to see greatness in everyone you meet. Then, little by little, the world will become a better place for us to share.

Time provides all of us with the opportunity to change, alter our belief system, and create new perspectives that challenge a person’s character and teach him or her how to become a happier and wiser person.
