The POWER HOUR.....how to get 'big' and 'important' things done!

Welcome Warriors,

'I AM A PROCRASTINATOR' he said.

I AM this thing.

When exploring the hot topic of procrastination with a client last week.....I had a deja vu moment.

I've heard this story before.

Quite a few times actually.

Different names and places, but pretty much the same.

No....you're a human.

You might BE procrastinating but YOU are not A procrastinator

'I don't know why I'm wasting time.'

'I don't know why I can't seem to just get started.'

'Every week I find myself AVOIDING and I feel like a failure.'

I told him I was sensing the emotion of despair.

'I know I'm doing it.'

(and you think it's who you are)

'I don't know how to stop doing it.'

(you do, you just don't want to because continuing to do so is consistent with your identity)

'It doesn't feel good.'

(I hear you)

'Tell me the cost of this AVOIDANCE'

'It's draining.'

'I feel like a failure'

'I don't believe myself anymore.'

'I don't trust my own word.'

'Talk to me about your IDENTITY as a procrastinator'

'It's a negative identity, I hate being a 'procrastinator'

'I know, I know....it's a self perpetuating cycle. Every time I procrastinate I reinforce this identity.'

Right.

So shall we stick with what we know to be true?

You're not a procrastinator.

You are a human who is procrastinating in particular situations.

We gathered evidence of occasions when he did not procrastinate.

The evidence proved that he was not always a procrastinator and could be quite proactive at times.

We explored what was going on when it did happen.

What were the conditions.

What were the types of tasks.

'It's always when I've got really important things to do.'

'Big things that really matter.'

'I always leave them to the last minute.'

'I get them done in the end.'

'But I create a lot of stress for myself along the way.'

So what is it that you want?

'I want to break this cycle'

What is the cycle?

'Procrastination'

'Anxiety,'

'Stress,'

'Panic,'

'Action.'

That's lot going on in your head in this type of cycle.

A lot of stories.

Usually not good ones.

How can we shift this PATTERN?

How can we change our identity?

How can we start getting the 'big', 'important' stuff done?

Druuuuum rooooooll!

Let's talk about POWER work.

Let's talk about how you can use a POWER HOUR.

My client identified that there was a common factor in the conditions in which he 'procrastinated.'

He had 'big' and 'important' things to do.

When we explored why it happened with 'big' and 'important' things, he identified that he experienced a sense of overwhelm and didn't know where to start.

That's the thing about 'big' and 'important' things.

They are so 'big.'

And so 'important.'

It's hard to know where to start.

And so we don't,

Start.

Back to POWER work.

The POWER HOUR.

Rule No 1:

No tasks that take longer than 20 mins on your plan/ to do list

E.g. Complete paper for board meeting (NO)

Rule No 2:

Replace all tasks that take longer than 20 mins on your plan with a timed action.

E.g. Spend 30 mins on paper for board meeting (YES)

Complete paper for board meeting (NO)

VS

Spend 30 mins on paper for board meeting (YES)

Which one feels easy to do?

Creating POWER hours (or half hours), creates the conditions we need to START.

We avoid things that feel painful and overwhelming.

We like things that feel short.

We want to do things we are confident we can achieve.

Remember, we are not procrastinators, we are humans.

Humans like to start things that they KNOW they will finish.

Humans can commit easily to things that they KNOW they can do.

I help high achievers take action.

To plan in a way that makes success inveitable.

Success on YOUR terms.

Do you want to examine what's happening in your mind?

Do you want to understand how your identity is impacting your performance?

Are you ready to take yourself and your impact to the next level?

What are you waiting for?

Message me, let's talk.

With love,

Kaya
