The Power of Mentorship: A Personal Reflection

The Power of Mentorship: A Personal Reflection

One of my most rewarding experiences at Warner Bros. was mentoring at MediaCamp, a three-month accelerator program to support startups innovating the media and entertainment landscape through mentorship and guidance.

I had the privilege of mentoring Ying-Ying Lee and Peter Chen, the dynamic duo behind Sidevision. Their company developed an inventive video player that enabled YouTube creators to seamlessly integrate e-commerce opportunities, showcase products alongside their videos, and earn affiliate revenue.

What Mentorship Gave Me

Genuine Connections

The most valuable outcome of mentoring was the friendship I formed with Ying-Ying and Peter. Years after MediaCamp, my family and I attended their unforgettable wedding in Seattle, which was filled with joy and laughter. Without MediaCamp, I might never have met this bright, hardworking pair. While Sidevision eventually closed, watching them tackle new ventures in the digital space has been inspiring. I am deeply grateful that our professional collaboration blossomed into a lifelong friendship.

A Renewed Sense of Purpose

It feels good to help people you like.

Sharing my industry insights with Ying-Ying and Peter wasn’t just about supporting their journey—it also gave me a more profound sense of fulfillment. Knowing that my guidance contributed to their growth remains a source of personal pride.

How Mentorship Improved My Skills

  • Leadership: Mentoring reinforced the importance of empowering others, adapting to their needs, and giving constructive feedback that encourages growth.
  • Strategic Thinking: Advising on challenges with their product strengthened my ability strategic and operational skills. I thrive on breaking down complex problems into bite-sized chunks of actionable items.
  • Collaborative Communication: The experience deepened my communication skills—both with my mentees and across Warner Bros. Listening closely, fostering open dialogue, and aligning on goals were critical to success.

Mentorship is a two-way street. It empowers mentees and challenges mentors to evolve and expand their skills. Whether you’re guiding or being guided, mentorship can make a meaningful impact. I encourage you to seek mentorship at your company or elsewhere.

And you might gain some new friendships along the way.
