Leader vs. Manager: Why I Ended Up Wearing Both Hats!

Recently, someone asked me, "What's the difference between a leader and a manager?" I answered quickly (maybe too quickly): "A leader inspires the team with a vision, while a manager focuses on the details and process." 

Then, after reflecting more while writing this article, I came up with more traits for each type. This is not an exhaustive list, but a start.

Traits of a Good Leader

  • Inspires People
  • Creative
  • Risk Taker
  • Empowers the Team
  • Decisive 
  • Adaptable

Traits of a Good Manager

  • Problem-Solver
  • Organized 
  • Detail-Oriented 
  • Good Time Management
  • Loves Process
  • Analytical
  • Keeps Budgets Top of Mind

Initially, I planned to write this article about the differences between the two types. Then I thought, "Can you be both a leader and a manager?" 

Let's cut to the chase. Can you be both a leader and a manager? The answer is a resounding yes. It's not always easy, as some of these traits might conflict. However, project management is not about choosing one over the other but about finding a delicate balance.

In my career, especially in roles like Vice President of Marketing Operations at Warner Bros., I often found the lines between leadership and management blurring. Sometimes, I had to don both hats in a single meeting! This constant juggling was not always a walk in the park. I had to blend a leader's big-picture thinking with a manager's detailed focus. 

So, how do you strike this balance? Here are a few essential qualities I value:

  • Lead by Example: Inspire by doing. Show you are not afraid to work.
  • Own It: Gather the necessary information and execute. Don't go dark, though. Communicate frequently and ask for help when required.

  • Don't Hide: Be visible, leave your office, and walk around. I tried to do this at least once a day. I love to chat, and as a bonus, I got in "some" of my steps.

  • Block and Tackle: I am not a sports guy, but I like a good sports metaphor. Remove obstacles for your team, from office politics to red tape, and help them focus.

  • Be Decisive: Make a decision. Be bold and decide even if you have limited information.

  • Stick Your Neck Out: Stand up for your team. I've got your back is a powerful statement.

  • Say "Thank You": It is the right thing to do; the bonus is that it boosts morale.

  • Respect the Chain of Command: Respect the reporting structure. If a team member comes to me with an issue, I always ask if they've spoken to their supervisor first. Don't undermine direct reports unless the problem is with the supervisor.

  • Have an Open Door: Be open and approachable. We have all had bad days, and then a team member knocks on your door. Take a breath. Put your phone away. Close your laptop. Be there for them. Be present.

  • Keep Everyone on the Same Page: Communication should be clear, proactive, and frequent. 

  • Walk the Talk: Do what you say you will do. You and your team should be accountable for your words and actions. 

  • Let Creatives Be Creative: Give creative people space, time, and resources to explore. 

  • Mutual Respect: Everyone has something to contribute. 

  • Nice and Easy: Treat others well, especially when things are not going well.

  • Show Your Passion: Be enthusiastic. It is contagious and a great motivator.

  • Don't Be a Screamer: Be like Captain America, who didn't need to scream "Avengers Assemble" in the portals scene in Avengers: End Game to get the job done. Fun fact: This is the first time he said this iconic line in the MCU. And this geek needs to wipe back tears every time he watches this scene.

Did I embody all these traits perfectly all the time? No. But did I try to every day? Absolutely. It is a daily commitment, and I'm always eager to learn and improve.
