A Practical Starting Guide to Generative AI Adoption for Your Company

A Practical Starting Guide to Generative AI Adoption for Your Company

Imagine a tool that drafts critical business memos, generates personalized customer insights, or even identifies operational inefficiencies—all within minutes. This is no longer a distant vision but a present reality enabled by Generative AI. For executives, the challenge is no longer whether to adopt this technology but start to better understand its potential in order to leverage it strategically and responsibly to stay ahead.

Why Generative AI Matters Now

Generative AI is a transformative force, reshaping how organizations innovate, streamline operations, and empower teams. From generating text and images to writing code, it enables efficiency and creativity on an unprecedented scale. Yet, its adoption requires more than curiosity—it demands leadership, strategic vision, and cross-functional collaboration.

Generative AI for many executives is still an emerging technology. You are reading it almost every day in general and specialized press. You may even have tried it out, for personal or professional use. You may have found your first great cases. But, are you really aware of its full potential? Plus, while the technology may seem to you as still emerging, it is maturing and improving fast.

Be aware that it creates text, images, code, and more. It is proving to be a versatile tool in so many instances, from improving efficiency, driving innovation, enhancing decision-making to enhancing customer and employee empowerment – it is literally scaling personalization. If in your mind you are still pondering questions like what exactly is this technology, and how to start leveraging generative AI effectively and responsibly, this guide is for you.

Still, while the possibilities are significant, I would also like to raise a word about being cautious and mindful when thinking about organization-wide adoption. Generative AI introduces significant challenges. Its adoption requires not only an understanding of its capabilities but also careful alignment with organizational goals, a commitment to ethical use, and readiness to adapt workflows and team dynamics. The speed of this change is noteworthy, but its depth—the ability to transform both routine and strategic activities—is where its true potential lies. Hence, it should be clear that any adoption has to be consensuated across the organization – it is not just an issue for technologists.

This guide is designed to help you to navigate this technology with confidence and purpose. Drawing on extensive research and work with senior leaders, I want to ffers a structured approach to understanding and implementing generative AI in your workplace.

Given the breadth of writing a comprehensive guide, I have broken it into a series of articles that, while designed as a cohesive collection, can also be read individually based on your interests, expertise, and time. The structure is as follows:

A General Word on How to Get Started:

For any executive new to AI, a quick reflection about some emerging good practices for starting your journey into the world of Generative AI:

  1. Start by Learning the Basics: It is crucial to get a basic understanding of the evolution of AI over time, and how we just recently started to delve into the world of Generative AI. Learn about its potential applications, and how to proceed to adopt AI, in your life and at work, in a safe and structured way. This is why I have decided to start this series. Also, start playing around with Generative AI tools – experience is, as so often, your best teacher. Read and follow thought leaders, such as for example Ethan Mollick .
  2. Assessment: Once you feel comfortable enough about these new tools, let’s start identifying business areas where AI could add value. Again, do this in a mindful and structured ways, understanding certain do’s and don’ts. Continue playing around with the technology on your own -and probably with your team- to start understanding some basic sources of value for your work and organization. Again, be mindful about risks. Come up with a list of potential use cases. Again, senior leaders that are fostering adoption in companies, such as for example BBVA's Elena Alfaro .
  3. From Use Cases to Pilots: Start formulating small pilot projects to test feasibility and ROI of identified use cases. Understand who to involve, which investments are needed. Very often, your organization will need to adapt, your people will need to reskill or upskill. Think beyond technological implications – you probably are affecting a variety of areas, so get them involved early. For customization projects, think transversal. It’s a change journey for everybody.
  4. Partnerships: Sometimes, you will require external guidance or buy external solutions. From off-the-shelf enterprise licenses for certain applications to customized assistants. You may need to engage with AI consultants or technology providers for additional guidance. Stay tuned about what dedicated research centers -such as IESE Business School 's Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Management Initiative- are finding in their research.
  5. Scaling: This is where it gets really complex. Expanding successful AI initiatives while managing risks and ensuring ethical use. Be extremely careful, understanding that you are on an explorative journey in which unexpected consequences will most probably impact your intended initiative.

A Final Thought before Beginning

Generative AI is not just a technology—it's a strategic enabler. Its successful adoption hinges on thoughtful leadership and an iterative, collaborative approach.
