President Biden and the rebuilding the US and a rules-based order
President Biden came into office following the unorthodox Presidency of his precedessor Donald Trump. Alliances were damaged, US credibility questioned, and domestic divisions open for all to see as the Covid-19 pandemic ravaged all parts of society.
Today we see a very different US and leadership inn the White House that is systematic, sequential and that stresses the importance of allies, consulation and leadership.
Soon after comping into power, Biden sent his top diplomat to Tokyo and Seoul to reaffirm Washington's commitment to its alliances. The Quad Summit was then convened prior to meeting with Chinese counterparts in Alaska.
This systematic and sequential approach rebuilding the US and a rules-based order in the wake of international challenges to the rules-based order from China an Russia as well a domestic challenges from MAGA supporters continues with landmark domestic bills such as the Inflation Reduction Act includes nearly $400 billion in tax credits and subsidies for a myriad of clean energy programs — from home retrofits, to electric vehicles, to clean utilities, a bill for spending $1 trillion on infrastructure, bill designed to give the U.S. a boost in its technological race with China, with $79 billion for research, advanced manufacturing, and semiconductor production, and more.
On the foreign policy front, working with the EU, Japan, Australia, South Korea, NZ and others, the US has effectively helped the Ukrainians defend themselves from Russia's invasion and over the past week signed important reassurance agreements with both the Philippines and South Korea.
While not without problems, President Biden has resisted a hard turn to the progressive left in his part to contribute to rebuilding the US and a rules-based order.
