Private Mobile Networks, FWA CPE industry trends and more...

This month’s GSA Monthly Pulse newsletter takes a deeper dive into the private mobile networks in the manufacturing sector. To support our new report on this key market, we were joined by 5G-ACIA for a webinar looking at the trends and case studies of private mobile in connected industries. You can find out more in the lead story below.

September also saw the publication of results from this year's CPE survey, conducted among 30 members of the GSA 4G-5G FWA Forum. We've pulled out the top-10 takeaways below - but download the report or watch the on-demand webinar to dig into the details.

This month, the GSA is busy with events. If you're attending Network X in Paris, I encourage you to participate in the FWA Forum workshop where CSPs and the FWA ecosystem will share their FWA deployment experiences.  We also have a Regional Spotlight webinar focusing on the latest 4G and 5G trends impacting Africa.

Private mobile networks in the manufacturing sector

The manufacturing industry has emerged as the dominant force in the rapidly evolving private mobile networks landscape, overtaking large sectors such as education, mining and public utilities. In September, GSA came together with 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) to delve into the private mobile network market for manufacturing, offering insights into sector trends, geographic distributions and case studies that highlight the transformative role of private networks in modern manufacturing.

For manufacturers globally, private mobile networks have become crucial, supporting the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies such as the Internet of things (IoT), automation and smart manufacturing systems. These networks allow for greater control, security and reliability in industrial environments, fostering innovation and operational efficiency. GSA’s private mobile networks reference data, most of which is not publicly available, further breaks down the manufacturing industry by sectors such as discrete and process manufacturing.

Deployment of Private Mobile Networks

As of August 2024, GSA has identified 1,489 private mobile network customers deploying globally, consisting of both public and private references. On average, 70% of these references are non-public and unique to this database, submitted by members of the GSA Private Mobile Networks Special Interest Group. There are 80 countries that now have at least one private mobile network.

Since GSA’s first private mobile network report in 2022, three industries have consistently made up the largest number of customer deployments globally: manufacturing, education and academic research, and mining. As of August 2024, manufacturing had the largest number of deployments, with 298 customer references. This is considerably higher than the second-largest industry, education and academic research, which had 149 references.

GSA also tracks manufacturing subcategories. Of these, electrical equipment, appliances and components is the largest, having overtaken automotive in the February 2024 edition of GSA’s Private Mobile Networks report. Rounding out the top four are machinery and equipment, and computer, electronic and optical products.

Manufacturing by Region

As of 2Q24, Europe has the largest number of manufacturing customer references, across a wide range of subcategories. This is unsurprising as Germany, France and the United Kingdom are major automotive manufacturers. Other large subcategories in Europe include electrical equipment, appliances and components.

Asia shows a similar picture to Europe. However, electrical equipment, appliances and components is the largest subcategory, followed by computer, electronic and optical products and automotive.

Northern and Latin America are the only other regions with more than one private mobile network reference. For Northern America, electrical equipment, appliances and optical products is the largest subcategory, followed by automotive and chemicals. Despite the United States and Canada’s large petroleum and coke industries, the subcategory has only seen one reference so far.

The Middle East, Oceania and Sub-Saharan Africa have only one manufacturing reference each, focused on non-metallic mineral products in the Middle East, chemicals in Oceania and basic or primary metals in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Summary As industries increasingly adopt digital transformation, the role of private mobile networks in facilitating automation, IoT and advanced communication systems will only expand, solidifying their importance in modern manufacturing. Continued innovation in network architecture, including standalone, virtual and hybrid approaches, will further accelerate the adoption of private mobile networks in industrial environments, shaping the future of manufacturing.

FWA CPE Survey - the results!

In September, the GSA 4G-5G FWA Forum shared the results of its annual FWA CPE vendor survey. With no currently agreed market definitions, there is a lack of market information and no consensus about the volume of FWA device shipments and FWA installed base globally. The annual FWA CPE market survey - conducted among 30 CPE vendors representing a global sample of the 3GPP-based 4G and 5G FWA ecosystem - aims to address these issues.

GSA: FWA CPE Vendor Survey 2024

The summary results were shared with the wider industry through a summary report (free to download here) and a snapshot webinar (watch on-demand replay here). Members of the GSA 4G-5G FWA Forum have access to the detailed results of the annual survey.

The top-10 takeaways from the 2024 FWA CPE survey include:

  1. In 2024, shipments of FWA CPE are expected to grow 23% to reach 37.5 million units. Reported total CPE shipments in 2023 amounted to 30.4 million from 30 respondents, a 2% increase from 2022.
  2. 5G-enabled FWA shipments became mainstream, reaching 10.2 million in 2023. The growth of 5G FWA CPE shipments is expected to accelerate further, accounting for 42% of shipments in 2024 compared with 34% in 2023. By comparison, 4G FWA CPE shipments fell 5% between 2022 and 2023. Less than half of respondents will introduce a new 4G CPE product this year.
  3. Various regions drove growth of 5G FWA shipments in 2023, in contrast with 2022, when most shipments were concentrated in North America. India is now contributing to this upward trend in shipments, with 86% of those reported being 5G-enabled, followed by North America (65%) and the rest of Asia–Pacific (39%).
  4. Shipments are still dominated by indoor CPE (60%), followed by battery-operated hot spots (25%) and outdoor CPE (15%). Within outdoor CPE, flexible self-install devices are expected to grow from 1.6 million to 1.9 million. Their share of shipments in the category is expected to remain at about one-third.
  5. Shipments of 5G devices with millimetre-wave (mmWave) capability rose 63% between 2022 and 2023 and are forecast to grow 22% by 2024 but remaining at under 10% of all 5G shipments.
  6. When it comes to 5G standalone, 60% of shipments in 2023 supported the technology. These are expected to grow in 2024, reaching 8.9 million units, up from 6 million in 2023.
  7. There is strong interest in RedCap, with 63% of respondents stating they will be introducing a 5G RedCap CPE device in 2024.
  8. According to 40% of respondents, 5G CPE will reach price parity with its 4G counterpart by 2026, a year later than in last year’s survey.
  9. Most respondents claim that window-mounted CPE and self-installation apps are growing; flexible indoor and outdoor CPE are set to remain flat; and hybrid fibre/DSL CPE will decline.
  10. More than half of respondents do not expect component shortages but do anticipate inflationary pressures in 2024.

Participants in the survey included: Airgain, Asiatelco Technologies Co, Askey, BEC Technologies, Chanhong, Compal, Da Ta Technologies, DZS (formerly Casa Systems), Elsys, Gemtek, Gongjin Mobile Communication/T&W, Green Packet, Huawei, Intelbras, Jaton Technology, MeiG Smart Technology, Nokia, Notion InfoTech, Shenzhen Jointelli, Smawave Technology, StartUSA, Tigercel, Tozed Kangwei, Vantiva, Wavetel, WNC, Xiamen Four-Faith, YaoJin Technology, ZTE and Zyxel.

How can we shape the future of mobile connectivity with 6G?

Qualcomm

The transition from 5G to 6G will not just be a technological evolution but a strategic shift that will likely affect how future 6G features are adopted and the financial returns on current 5G networks. The choices made early in this transition are crucial. With 6G, operators could not only market the latest technology standard but also capitalize on the many technological innovations that the 3GPP has standardized for 5G Advanced.
