Redirecting sunlight, clean hydrogen roadmap, and more.

Here’s your clean energy update.

🗺️ A Clean Energy Roadmap for Hydrogen

DOE, in conjunction with other federal agencies, developed the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, a comprehensive framework for accelerating the production, processing, delivery, storage, and use of clean hydrogen—a versatile and flexible energy carrier that can be produced with low or zero carbon emissions.

🔥 Hot Technology

Nearly 11 million U.S. homes use cordwood or wood pellets for space heating, producing 7% of the nation’s harmful particulate emissions. Now, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are teaming up to improve air quality through wood heater innovation, with $4 million in funding provided by EERE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office. Concept papers are due August 11.

🏆 Prizes Spur Innovation

The American-Made Heliostat Prize, which opened on June 1, is a multi-phase competition offering $3 million in cash prizes for innovations and credible concepts for technology supporting heliostat technologies. A critical component of concentrated solar power systems, heliostats track the sun’s movement and tilt mirrors to reflect sunlight to a receiver for long-duration energy storage. Concept papers are due July 31.

All 10 teams participating in the inaugural American-Made Community Clean Energy Coalition Prize have successfully completed Phase Two of the competition, with each team awarded $150,000 in cash prizes. The goal of the prize is to recognize and encourage community coalitions assisting underrepresented communities in addressing local energy challenges with clean, #renewableenergy solutions.

🎤 Looking for Public Feedback

Clean energy technologies require a different set of material supply chains from those powering the fossil fuel economy. Prior to finalization, DOE is seeking public feedback on its Critical Materials Assessment to improve the assessment of critical materials important for meeting climate policy goals, reducing carbon emissions, and preventing environmental damage. Responses are due June 20.

The Office of Management and Budget is seeking input from public stakeholders about improving and enhancing federal statistical data collection designed to measure the economic value of the U.S. bioeconomy (the share of the economy based on products, services, and processes derived from biological resources, such as plants and microorganisms, for example).

Each month, we’ll spotlight feature stories, news, and events from EERE’s technology offices and DOE’s national labs. Here’s the latest:
