Reflecting on bigBANG! 2024: A Celebration of Connection, Purpose, and Innovation
As we reflect on bigBANG! 2024, we are filled with gratitude for the conversations and insights shared throughout this year’s conference. Over two days, attendees came together to explore the evolving landscape of connection and purpose in a world increasingly shaped by technology and social change. This year's themes emphasized the importance of fostering human connection and reimagining our values in light of new realities and the advancement of artificial intelligence.
Fostering Connection in a Digital Age
Led by Yutaka Tamura , the session on “Fostering the Human Need for Connection and Purpose in a Digital World” highlighted our intrinsic yearning for belonging and purpose. In a highly interactive setting, participants engaged in strategies to cultivate personal connections and a sense of community amidst the complexities of our digital interactions. Tamura's insights reminded us that while technology can connect us, it is the human element that sustains our relationships and purpose.
Financial Activism and Collective Well-Being
A standout moment of the conference was the live recording of Krys Boyd ’s “Think” interview with Jasmine Rashid , author of The Financial Activist Playbook. Rashid introduced attendees to the concept of financial activism, encouraging us to reclaim wealth and reimagine finance as a tool for collective well-being. Her actionable strategies empower individuals to engage with their finances meaningfully, emphasizing that we don’t need to be financial experts to make a significant impact.
The Role of Humanity in an AI-Driven World
Robert Hunt 's session on “All Brain and No Soul? Real Humanity in an AI Age” sparked a critical discussion on how our increasing reliance on technology may compromise our fundamental human qualities. Participants examined the impact of AI and social media on authentic relationships, fostering a deeper understanding of how to maintain our humanity in an era of rapid technological advancement.
Economic Perspectives on Human Experiences
Cullum Clark ’s presentation, “An Economist’s Perspective,” challenged traditional views of economics, presenting it as a discipline rich in human stories and experiences. Clark emphasized that understanding economics through a compassionate lens can illuminate both societal shortcomings and successes, enriching our collective narrative.
Human-Centered Design for Social Impact
Jessica Burnham introduced the principles of human-centered design, demonstrating how addressing real human needs can drive impactful solutions. Her real-world examples, including collaborations with local organizations, showcased the power of innovative design to connect communities and foster social impact.
New Values for a New Era
Casey Rogers ’ session, “New Values For The 21st Century,” resonated deeply with attendees as she explored the evolution of our value systems in response to socio-economic and environmental changes. She posed thought-provoking questions about who can drive these new values, suggesting that nature and our younger generations could serve as essential teachers in this transformation.
Soul, Society, and Technology
In a compelling panel discussion moderated by Robert Hunt ( @The Perkins School of Theology, SMU), participants including Rev. Irene Sessions (DreamBIG), Rev. Mitchell Boone (First UMC), Chris Duffy (Comedian,Television Writer, and Radio/Podcast Host), and Naisha Randhar (Youth Poet Laureate of Dallas) delved into what makes us uniquely human.
