Reflections from My Journey with ServiceNow
As August ends and the warm days of summer give way to the renewal of cool autumn evenings, it is with great excitement, extraordinary pride, and deep appreciation that I share that my remarkable journey with ServiceNow has come to a conclusion.
Without a doubt, it has truly been the most rewarding and enriching experience of my career thus far. I am immensely proud of the astounding accomplishments we achieved together over the past decade. What an incredible ride it has been! Here are my personal reflections...
THE JOURNEY
Looking out over the Manhattan skyline from the 74th floor of Hudson Yards, I can't help but reflect how my journey has come full circle. Being born in Flushing in New York City and growing up here writing my first software during computer camp at 8 years old, witnessing countless triumphs in this city including my father building a successful career in midtown, my family going to see historic Yankees, Mets, Knicks and Rangers games, as a teenager seeing epic bands like Kiss, Aerosmith, Guns N Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters, and literally 100s of others perform during their prime and most importantly witnessing the grit, perseverance and work ethic required in this demanding city that set a very high bar for me when I came out of college and started my own tech career here in the late 90s during the dot com boom. Seeing the resilience and fortitude in this city during and after 9/11, and seeing the skyline I grew up with destroyed and then rebuilt, has forever shaped my perspective. To return here to this office with this view all these years later as I am asked to brief CIOs globally on their digital business transformation strategies with low code app development completes a circle in a remarkable journey.
When I first came to ServiceNow 8 years ago, I had just left the federal government after a decade+ of civil service, was building a house, finishing my MBA, and raising three young children that were just learning to take their first steps, read, write and perform in theater. Contrast that to today where I have a trio of extraordinary young women who I spent the summer rocking out to Taylor Swift in Germany and are now entering college, entering middle school and ready to take on the world with their creativity, ambition and aspirations. Raising them and watching them flourish has been the backdrop soundtrack to my years at ServiceNow.
By the end of my first year here in 2017, I was balancing a growing family, completing my MBA, and building a solution consulting team focused on a new type of business for ServiceNow. It was a tumultuous but yet very exciting time. Around that time, a senior executive asked me in a 1-1: "So what have you learned during your first year?" I paused for a moment and simply responded that I had learned when I push myself, I can achieve and execute far more, with a greater impact, than I ever thought possible. When pressed to balance shifting priorities and figure out how to effectively deliver on some of the most difficult and most demanding work I was ever faced with ... is when I found my calling and thrived!
Looking back over my 8 remarkable years with ServiceNow, it has truly been a story and an unbelievable journey of professional as well as personal growth and extraordinary achievements. I am humbled and gleaming with pride to have been part of such a remarkable company and organization at such a pivotal time in technology and business.
Helping lead and build out this new app dev focused business was an awe inspiring journey. Taking part of the portfolio of this Fortune 500 company from a non-existent GTM at the end of 2016 into a world class Low Code Creator Workflows Business Unit and Multi-Product Line in 2024 has been a true business case study in determination, focus, growth, purpose, team work, creativity, overcoming obstacles, building coalitions, recruiting, organization change management, solution selling, marketing, communications, value selling and perseverance. Growing App Engine's revenue by over 30X during this time has been a stunning turnaround. It's one of the most profound accomplishments of my career.
Honestly, when I first arrived at ServiceNow, app dev on the platform was a niche capability that was generally given away or bundled to drive the sales of other SaaS product offerings and generating only $20M a year in revenue with no dedicated sales or pre-sales resources and no clear pricing or GTM strategy. Many believed at the time that there was no market nor was it worthwhile to monetize this area of the platform.
By cultivating a world-class team, engaging with and listening to customers globally, thinking outside the box, challenging the status quo, infusing energy and passion, making everyone feel heard, sharing stories and best practices for success, and most importantly, providing innovative solutions to the challenges organizations faced, we proved remarkably successful. Today the ServiceNow Creator Workflows business, incorporating multiple product lines, exceeds $1B in combined annual revenue. Hyper-growth in 8 years beyond anyone's wildest imagination!
THE LESSONS LEARNED
My experience at ServiceNow was life changing in so many ways. I grew professionally by leaps and bounds. While there is a tremendous amount of insight I gained during this time, I am sharing the top five key takeaways and lessons learned from my journey that may serve to help guide you on yours:
(1) FIND YOUR PASSION
You may hear many leaders in various commencement addresses talk about 'Following Your Passion.' Well that might be all good and everything, as I am certainly passionate about what I do, but I prefer to subscribe to a slightly modified version of this, 'FIND Your Passion.' And as it turns out, that will usually be something you are very good at!
On a path of discovery and learning, I figured out firsthand that getting "comfortable being uncomfortable" and pushing yourself to the max—while being pushed and challenged by others—revealed what I was truly capable of. I discovered not only my own potential but also the potential of those around me, and ultimately realized that what I was most passionate about was also where I excelled and thrived. Challenging the status quo and championing so many new and completely out of the box ideas, tasks and initiatives is exactly what led to finding my true passion: Designing technical solutions and business strategies with customers and building, growing and leading cross-functional Solution Consulting teams and GTM organizations!
LESSONS LEARNED: Constantly be seeking out tasks and taking on initiatives that you may have not done previously as a means to continually grow and evolve in your career and discover what you are truly capable of. Stepping outside your comfort zone isn’t a one-time event, but an ongoing practice essential for continuous growth and striving for excellence in your career. Regularly ask yourself: What new challenge am I taking on, learning from, and growing through? Taking on new initiatives outside of your comfort zone is the best way to FIND what you are capable of and passionate about. Never say you haven't done something, always state you haven't done it YET!
(2) THE SECRET CODE: FIND YOUR AUTHENTIC VOICE AND ENGAGE
When I first started at ServiceNow and I was leading larger teams and public speaking more widely, I struggled to settle in a bit. But very early on, I was fortunate that an Executive Leader offered me the best communication advice I ever received and set me on an unstoppable path, "Find YOUR Voice."
They advised me to stop trying so hard to be or emulate someone else. Stop trying to be the meme of what I thought a good corporate tech leader should be or memorize impressive facts. Their advice was simply to just be myself, speak from the heart and find my authentic voice of what I had to say and everything else would fall into place. Share what I found was interesting and likely others would too. Every individual is unique and we all have something different to say based on our experiences and journeys. I love technology to my core and was always great at engaging others and taking complex concepts and communicating them to friends and associates in a simple relatable storytelling manner with sincere passion.
Once I stopped trying to be 'something', I was able to embrace who I truly was: an energetic and unapologetic New Yorker that is driven, self motivated and loves film, rock & roll, entertainment, baseball and is fundamentally passionate about helping people and genuinely enthusiastic about solving real practical issues with technology and app dev.
After I found MY VOICE and tapped into MY WHY (my nod to Simon Sinek ), suddenly I was able to CONNECT and ENGAGE with EVERYONE on EVERY level: customers, partners, interns, teams, managers, leaders, individual contributors, CIOs, CEOs, CFOs, etc. It's as though I had unlocked the secret code. All this by simply being my authentic passionate self, I was able to communicate and engage in a sincere way and on a scale that culminated in meaningful connections. The energy and interest I was able to convey was infectious and suddenly everyone was asking me to speak internally and externally. My keynotes, my all hands, and my executive briefings and even my routine internal meetings seemed to come together with a sense of ease and became very impactful leveraging my natural storytelling voice.
This ability to listen with sincere curiosity and share observations resonated universally. I was able to connect with individuals at every level across different industries, countries and cultures. My public speaking dance card with customers started filling up and I was able to hone and elevate my skills as one of the most popular speakers for ServiceNow. Whether I was talking and listening to customers in Seoul, Dubai, Sydney or Tokyo and whether I was working with my teams or partners in São Paulo, Ottawa, Denver or Frankfurt, people connected with my STORIES from other customers, WHO I truly was and WHY I am doing what I do.
LESSONS LEARNED: Follow your instincts, discover your why and find your voice and run with it. People connect with authenticity and WHO YOU ARE and YOUR PURPOSE will drive YOUR success and OTHERS success and genuine interest as well. Certainly perfect and tailor your communication style to the appropriate audience, but once you find your voice and what you have to say, you might be surprised how many people will listen and everything else will click into place.
(3) OWN YOUR CAREER: BE RELENTLESS, DRIVE, DON'T WAIT
There are certainly times and circumstances in life and in business where patience is absolutely required and needed for strategic long term growth and impact. With that being said, when it comes to driving your own career, as an impatient New Yorker, this probably sounds like a cliche, "Don't Wait!" Far too often I have witnessed individuals waiting around for others to help drive and push their career growth. I encountered so many individuals complaining about no opportunities being presented for them to seize upon. I was lucky that early on in my career, I got great advice from some very successful and seasoned business leaders and entrepreneurs. They shared that no one will ever care more about your career and success more than you, so OWN IT! When it comes to your career growth and advancement, you need to DRIVE!
You need to be CEO of your career! Think of yourself as your own business manager responsible for taking ownership of your career plans and pushing yourself to strive for more. If there is something you want to learn or want to do, don't wait for someone to ask you, go make it happen and guess what.....others will take notice. It's okay if you don't have a specific destination in my mind as long as you keep driving forward. As Steve Jobs once famously said, "It's hard to connect the dots moving forward. But you have to trust that it will all work out and you will connect the dots looking back."
Take those extra courses, take on that extra assignment outside of your comfort zone, take that graduate class, propose that new initiative and approach you have been thinking about. Far too often, people wait to be given a green light or offered an opportunity before driving their own destiny. You need to seek it out and drive you own career growth. No one is going to do that for you. There will always be detractors or people with other plans or agendas that might hold you in place or present roadblocks. But when it comes to your career, you need to be relentless and drive!
When an individual contributor sought my advice on applying for leadership roles, I encouraged them to focus on helping others today and take on more initiatives where they could be leading efforts around them even in their normal interactions before they seek out and officially apply for specific roles. Leading efforts and helping people is not a title but a behavior! That is what we look for in people leaders. Don't wait! That individual is now one of the most effective and respected people leaders I know today.
LESSONS LEARNED: If you want the role, play the role BEFORE you get the role, demonstrating to everyone what you are capable of. You don't need a specific business title to begin demonstrating clear competences. When the roster spot opens up, you will have made it a no brainer for others with your demonstrated abilities. If the role doesn't exist, often a new role will be created with you in mind after people see what you are capable of delivering. Often it's not what you have done specifically but what you have shown you are capable of learning and accomplishing. Being fearless and resourceful are critical competencies. Your next role or position might not even exist yet. When you have this level of ownership and planning over your career, you can make deliberate and intentional career decisions, take calculated risks and you will know when it is time to move to different team or area of the business, take on a new role or even move to a different company to achieve your goals and attain what you are striving for. When it comes to your career, OWN IT AND DRIVE!
(4) STORYTELLING AND CONSISTENCY ARE ESSENTIAL
In tech and in business, there is no shortage of technical and statistical information to absorb. You can go online and view 1000s of video demonstrations of technical features and read through pages of endless presentations of in depth business and technical analysis. It can be challenging in this sea of overwhelming tech detail to convey and absorb information effectively.
Even though I am a lifelong techy who was been writing software since I was 8, I always found that whether I was talking to friends, relatives, colleagues or clients, knowing how to communicate via storytelling can be immensely impactful and effective. Through all of the different roles I have held over the years, especially in Pre-Sales Solution Consulting, having the ability to convey information via a well articulated story has been critical to my success. When I was in the Federal Government and responsible for making large decisions around which technology platforms to leverage, hearing stories of other customers' success (and setbacks) is what I was most interested in. This was even more critical than the typical demos we are all used to seeing. Any Solution Consultant worth their salt, will tell you that a demo without a coherent and relevant persona-based story is not very impactful.
Several years ago I started doing something at ServiceNow that was not required nor asked of me but completely transformed our insight into our customers, our business and revolutionized our ability to share 100s of stories across industries on demand. Since I always loved to write (rare for a techy), I channeled my storytelling communication style into a weekly Use Case of the Week email where I shared a personally written story about how customers were being successful with technology solutions every week.
Recommended by LinkedIn
I initially started doing this out of curiosity and being unable to locate useful and insightful stories internally. I was constantly getting barraged with questions from the field about what customers could do and were doing with low code. I decided to start proactively sharing this insight. Since I started doing this, no Friday delivery was ever missed! There is something to be said for consistency and being reliable. It became a personal passion of mine and no matter how many other items we had on our plates or what time zone I was in or if it was a holiday or vacation, the Use Case of the Week went out no matter what. It became something that employees came to rely on and look forward to reading each week.
The feedback received from this communication was overwhelming! These stories were written in a very unique manner that departed from the conventional high-level technical bullet point way most tech use cases were typically authored. They were written with insight and relevancy that connected with many different people in a multitude of ways. They conveyed real examples of the application of technology to solve business issues as well as the best practices in the sales cycles that landed these opportunities. This became immensely useful for many different groups within the company.
While there was no shortage of 'opinions' about the best way to communicate this type of information, I followed my intuition and challenged the conventional status quo as I wanted to engage employees in a different way and provide insight that was missing from most high level write-ups previously shared. I wanted to make sure that the stories remained compelling and engaging. Setting the standard for the detail needed in each story, I continued to work relentlessly with our teams weekly to gather the right background info (much like a curious reporter) so they could be authored consistently from a sincere and honest place of curiosity. In the process we discovered some amazing hidden nuggets that were gold! I was always asking "What would I want to know if I was reading this?" That north star added that signature personal touch that was unmistakably engaging.
The results were connecting and engaging thousands of employees globally each week with stories and insight that helped uncover and propel so many new opportunities. This authentic communication was able to reach people with insight in a manner that other communications simply didn't. Compiling these stories in such detail consistently week in and week out also provided extraordinary insight into what our customers were doing with our technology across every industry. Being able to recite this information on demand in briefings, keynotes, internal product meetings or GTM meetings and most importantly in 1-1 customer conversations became invaluable. The number of positive responses poured in weekly from employees stating how this was "the most useful and impactful communication" they received. This feedback never ceased coming in the entire time these stories were shared. Not a single week passed without positive feedback like this! That connection and impact will stay with me always.
LESSONS LEARNED: Never underestimate the impact of leveraging storytelling in business. Whether it's written or verbal, formal or informal, internal or external, storytelling is absolutely one of the most impactful ways to communicate information to others. Sharing stories can provide insight into areas, industries, markets and opportunities that would otherwise go unheard or unseen. Listening intently to customers globally and digging in and being curious in gathering details from teams on how opportunities were achieved is essential to sharing impactful stories. Don't wait to be asked or assigned, be curious, gather information and share your stories consistently. As people, while we may not always remember technical details and visual demonstrations, we always remember a good story!
(5) HELP OTHERS: LEADERS LEAVE A WAKE
As a lifelong student of leadership, I have always sought ways to grow, mature and become more effective at leading people, teams and organizations. I have tried to emulate the traits of the most effective leaders I have admired and learn what mistakes to avoid from leaders that encountered challenges and setbacks in their style and approach. I am an obsessive student of the game, listening intently to the impact other leaders' style and approach had on others (including myself). This was critical to my growth, listening and paying attention to how other leaders performed and were perceived. Often I observed leaders having blind spots they weren't aware of. I discovered that honest self reflection in leadership is critical. Whenever I heard other people talking about leaders in the work place at different levels, I listened intently to their feedback. Good, bad or indifferent, I observed that ALL leaders ALWAYS leave a wake. My north star in leadership has always been to strive to be the type of leader I wanted to work for or follow. I ask myself daily, "What do I want from my leadership?" and that was always the driving force behind my approach, interactions and strategy.
I want my leaders to lead by example and more than anything I want to work for leaders that incorporate empathy, trust, strength, kindness, encouragement, passion, excellence, motivation, accountability, authenticity, experience, vulnerability and of course .....an unrelenting commitment to every individual and the mission at hand! A tall order for sure - right? But that is what I wanted from my leadership, so I always felt I had to deliver nothing less for those I was responsible for leading.
I have to share, the amount of messages I have received of gratitude since everyone has learned of my departure, communicating the impact that I have had on so many individuals' lives, both professionally and personally, has been overwhelming and humbling to say the least. Impacting people and their lives is what motivates and drives me. I sincerely love helping people, encouraging career growth and driving the mission. I am so proud of the individuals and other leaders I have worked with that have grown into extraordinary business professionals and confident public speakers. I always strive to make those around me operate at their absolute best. That is the legacy that I am most proud of. The people I helped in motivating, growing and driving their own careers, getting the promotions they sought and making a name for themselves in what they were able to achieve. Many of these individuals have gone on to pivotal roles as well as other companies and continue to help and guide countless others! A truly amazing cycle.
LESSONS LEARNED: Always strive to help grow others. You can judge an individual by the wake they leave and by the amount of other individuals they impacted and helped develop and grow. That is the ultimate test. I leave ServiceNow very proud of the wake I left. I know all of you will continue to thrive and accomplish great things in your career and help grow others. Keep striving for more and it will happen!
THE PEOPLE
Whenever you look back on a journey, it is the people that you interacted with that always stand out in your memories. My journey with ServiceNow is no exception. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to work with and partner with so many extraordinary individuals and teams. The accomplishments and the fun that we all had together while we worked so hard growing and evolving the organization was seriously epic! I am so thankful to all of the talented, dedicated and amazing people I have had the chance to work with. I have built so many wonderful professional relationships and personal friendships during my time with ServiceNow that I will always cherish.
Thank you to Ryan Fraser , Mark Morgan and Jeff Margolese for providing world class pre-sales solution consulting leadership, guidance and trust as we were building and evolving a small Platform Innovation team into App Engine Solution Consulting and the Workflow Design Studio and eventually into a remarkable Creator Workflows Global Solution Consulting organization driving the sales of low code app dev and intelligent automation globally. Your guidance, partnership, collaboration, friendship and insight helped challenge me at times and drove my personal growth as an individual, impact as a leader and knowledge as a pre-sales solution consulting professional. Thank you for your never ending support and encouragement in growing this unique business.
Thank you to the amazing Creator Workflows Solution Consulting Leadership Team with whom I worked tirelessly with in building out this cross-functional organization. We did all this during some of the most critical and challenging times together. I will never forget what each and every one of you contributed along the way to the success that is the Creator Workflows Solution Consulting team. Thank you.
Speaking of the Creator Workflows Solution Consulting team.....they are simply one of the absolute best pre-sales teams in the business. Especially given the challenges faced daily and the creativity and perseverance required to be successful. Selling an App Dev Platform is very different than selling pre-packaged applications and we figured out so many new, creative and effective ways to do that over the past 8 years. I have to call out and want to personally thank Shao Wei Tan for being one of the most remarkable individuals that I had the great honor of hiring, coaching, collaborating with and watching grow into nothing short of an extraordinary Solution Consultant and now an emerging Solution Consulting leader for the APAC business. I would also like to thank the platform focused solution consulting teams I worked so intimately with in the early days of Platform Innovation at ServiceNow as we waded through such a new and emerging area of the company together with no roadmap! Those were extraordinary and challenging times. I remember staying up all night in the Santa Clara Hilton with Dragan Preocanin , Chris Hann , AJ Siegel and Jeremy LaCroix to put together the very first Global Platform Innovation SC summit. We built the foundation for everything that flourished and followed there after. Coupling Human Centered Design and Low Code evolved into some amazing solution consulting offerings. Jeremy Duncan brought such a new and amazing energy and branding to not only this team but the company as a whole. He truly is the ultimate brand ambassador! Before there was a Creator Workflows, a Workflow Design Studio or an Innovation Factory there was just this small group of us figuring out this new innovative area of solution consulting together. Those are times and people I will never forget - thank you! Sush Chandrashekar , Arthur Oliveira , Joe Wilmoth , Darrin Achtman , Christopher Stoll , Steven Gregory , Jacob Shemkovitz , Fabio Petito , Fethi Uluak , Dylan Lindgren , Jonathan Adlum , Greg Grabowy , Meg Modest, Andrea Jenkins , Nicole Chiala , Chris Faulkner , Brian Alson , Chris Jeffree , James Tandy , Tom Cullen , Matt Metten , Frank Schuster , Mark O'Donnell .
I would be remiss if I didn't call out a very special group of individuals from my journey, the very first Innovation Factory team from the very first Developer SC Academy that Alice Santeiu , Julie Cozen-Harel and I worked with back in 2019. This came from a brainstorming idea of having early in career Solution Consultant Developers dedicated to making extraordinary demos, portals, widgets and PoCs. We were figuring this out as we went and this fearless group of five led the way in creating such an important and foundational part of our pre-sales offerings. I will never forget those early days together and the absolutely show stopping work you have all put together over the years! Madison Spina , Trevor Roberts , Claudia Cruz Ruiz , Brian Nguyen , Allisa Liberto and Brian Clauzel - keep shining and killing it!
One of the initiatives I helped established as a critical means of growth for the evolving the low code business was the tight collaboration and alliance between Product Marketing, Field Marketing, Developer Outreach, and Solution Consulting. This is an essential ingredient in hyper-growth. We planned and executed so many impactful and innovative pipeline generating events and hands-on workshops for our customers. We also developed and introduced Low Code Keynotes into all of our events before this was even a thing! This collaboration was nothing short of extraordinary and the results speak for themself. Thank you to everyone involved for such amazing team work. Lily Li Prupas , Chuck Tomasi , Jason McKee , Dave Slusher , Chris Maloy , Ayalla Goldschmidt , Kathryn M. Delivering Executive Briefings to our customers is one area of our GTM I really enjoyed and took great pride in evolving these briefings with so much refreshing content and working with amazing individuals throughout our Executive Briefing Centers globally. The outstanding EBC Management Staff, Innovation Team and Field Sales Leaders worked tirelessly in making this such an important part of the growth of the Creator Workflows business in reaching the C-Level of all customers. Too many to list here but THANK YOU to everyone. It was a remarkable journey together that I will not soon forget!
WHAT'S NEXT?
So what's next for me? Well, I couldn't be more excited and more optimistic about what the future holds! First, I’ll take some much-needed time off to catch my breath after this marathon, something I haven’t done in years. I’ll focus on quality time with my family in the short term—getting my eldest settled in at university and gaining her independence, helping my middle child get situated at her new school so she can thrive in her dream to work for NASA or SpaceX one day, and getting my youngest off to a great start at a new school, ready to take on the world!
