A “Relentless” Focus on Team Member Safety

A “Relentless” Focus on Team Member Safety

Safety Leadership is an MRC Global Core Value. Safety Leaders lead by example no matter their position, tenure or location.

“Safety Leadership is our first Core Value,” Rob Saltiel , MRC Global President & CEO, said. “We never compromise the safety of our team members or any third parties. In the warehouse, at the office or on the road, we are relentlessly focused on making MRC Global a place where no one gets hurt.”

Each June, MRC Global holds Safety Leadership Month to refocus and recommit to our journey to Zero Safety Incidents.

Meet some of our Safety Leaders and hear how they put MRC Global’s values into action every day.

Yngvil Henanger Woxen , Operations Manager – Bergen, Norway

What does Safety Leadership mean to you?

You see it, you own it. We need to show with action what we say we are going to do. We are all role models for each other. We need to have our team members’ safety and our own, in mind in all we do.

Stuart Blyth, Service Center Manager – New Zealand

Why is safety important to you?

Because nothing we do in our “day job” is worth an injury, or worse. The temptation to take a shortcut has the potential to impact the quality of our personal lives for the long term.

Dario Rodriguez, Driver & Warehouse Associate – Denver, CO

Why is safety important to you? What makes all of the extra focus worth it?

Staying safe at work makes sure I go home safe to my wife and daughter.

What makes a strong safety team?

We are always asking questions and looking out for each other in the warehouse. We get our tasks done as a team and listen to different points of view.

What advice would you give to a new team member about being a Safety Leader?

Don’t be shy about being a safety leader. We are all here to carry out our work in a safe manner and if you notice something unsafe, report it straight away. If anyone is doing something unsafe, they may not even realize the risk and will be grateful for your help.

Lisa Love, Pipeyard Manager – Nisku, Alberta Canada

What advice would you give to a new team member on their first day about being a safety leader?

Safety starts and ends with them. The decisions you make could have life-changing consequences so think before you do anything. I would encourage and empower them to think outside the box about what can happen and what they would do to prevent an incident.
