Reliability Benefit of Energy Generation Technologies
The Australian Energy Market Operation (AEMO) performs a complex role in "keeping the lights on" across Australia. The challenges they face are complex. Credit is due to their expertise and professionalism.
In their recent report AEMO have documented the relative reliability benefits of different energy generation technologies.
AEMO's reporting horizon is only 10 years (currently to 2034) and their detailed modelling is only available for one year (2029-2030).
Key take-outs form 2029-2030 modelling are;
While renewable energy implementations are proceeding, it is apparent that Wind and Solar provide minimal contributions to reliability in energy supply. In the case of NSW, Gas Turbines and Pumped Hydro will remain key to reliability in energy supply.
Detailed costings for energy generation are not available; relative benefits of different generation technologies are therefore no available.
Further modelling is required, out to 2050. Currently this modelling is not within AEMO's brief. Wind and Solar will not meet Australia's reliability requirements, based upon AEMO's analysis.
Publication of estimated Mega Watt Hours (MWh), in addition to Mega Watts (MW) capability, would appear necessary, in order to reflect reliability of energy supply?
