Review of "Alperin": Leo Damario and a Musical Painting by Ignacio Alperin

"Alperin" (2024), the micro-series of ten episodes of 90 seconds each, directed by Leo Damario and with technical realization and editing by Rodrigo Felman, offers an intimate and revealing window into the creative universe of the international artist Ignacio Alperin.

REVIEW

By Juan Pablo Russo Saturday, June 1, 2024

Alperin, born in Argentina and shaped by the cultural diversity of different countries, has developed an artistic language deeply influenced by music, especially jazz. This series captures not only his creative process but also the essence of his unique style, aptly described as "Visual Jazz."

From the first minutes, Damario manages to immerse us in Alperin's world, using a visual narrative that feels as improvised and rhythmic as the artist's own work. Felman's editing is precise, allowing each cut, each transition, to contribute to the visual musicality that characterizes Alperin. Every shot, functioning like a brush moving over the canvas, synchronized with a carefully selected soundtrack, reflects that fusion of art and music that is the painter's hallmark.

One of the series' highlights is how it explores Alperin's musical influences. Through his own voice and work scenes, we see how jazz and classical music not only inspire but also structure his creative process. Alperin does not paint to the beat of the music but visually interprets the improvisational techniques of the musicians. This approach allows him to create works that are both a visual experience and a silent audition of melodies and rhythms captured in colors and shapes.

The series also does justice to the bold color palette that characterizes Alperin. The novel gradients and shadows, which have become a signature of his style, are captured in high definition, allowing the viewer to appreciate the depth and complexity of his work. The scenes are lit in such a way that every hue and every shadow are revealed with impressive clarity.

However, what truly elevates "Alperin" is Damario's ability to convey the philosophy behind the painter's art. Through a narrative that flows as naturally as the artist's strokes, the series unravels the well-thought-out concepts underlying his apparent spontaneity. Each episode feels like a visual jazz session, where improvisation is always grounded in a deep understanding of technique and theory.

"Alperin" is more than just a documentary series; it is a poetic tribute to the capacity of art to transcend boundaries and merge disciplines. A work that not only documents but also celebrates the rich and vibrant connection between music and painting in Ignacio Alperin's work. For those seeking to understand the intersection between these two art forms, "Alperin" is an essential experience.
