The staff – doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals – work tirelessly to provide the best care possible, all while navigating the complexities of a dynamic and unpredictable environment, regulatory scrutiny and public attention. Amidst this chaos, the hospital command and control centre serves as a guiding light, a central hub that collects, processes, and analyzes vast amounts of real-time data, empowering healthcare teams to make critical decisions swiftly that save lives and improve patient outcomes. 


It is no surprise that the command and control centre's impact resonates throughout the entire hospital ecosystem. It streamlines patient flow, ensuring that each individual receives timely care, reduces wait times, and optimizes the use of limited resources. In turn, this heightened efficiency allows healthcare professionals to focus on what truly matters – the wellbeing of their patients.

This blog post, the first in a series of 10, acts as an introduction to command and control centres. Follow us to stay tuned for more over the coming weeks and months, as we dive deeper into the world of CCCs and introduce an effective framework for designing and implementing them. 


Hospital command centres are central locations within a hospital where staff can coordinate and manage the response to emergencies, disasters, and other critical events. These centres are typically equipped with a range of communication and technology tools, such as phones, radios, and computer systems, to help hospital staff stay connected and informed during an emergency. Command centres are also often used to track and monitor the location and status of hospital staff and resources, such as beds, equipment, and supplies, in order to ensure that they are used efficiently and effectively. Some hospital command centres are also responsible for coordinating the response to disasters and other emergencies outside the hospital, such as working with local emergency management agencies to provide medical support during a natural disaster, pandemic or terrorist attack.


There are several different types of hospital command centres, including:

  1. Emergency department command centres: These centres are typically located in the emergency department and are responsible for coordinating the care of patients with urgent or emergent needs.
  2. Trauma command centres: These centres are specifically designed to coordinate the care of patients with traumatic injuries and may be located in the emergency department or in a dedicated trauma unit.
  3. Disaster command centres: These centres are responsible for coordinating the hospital's response to disasters and other large-scale emergencies.
  4. Infectious disease command centres: These centres are responsible for coordinating the hospital's response to infectious diseases and may be activated during outbreaks or pandemics.
  5. Critical care command centres: These centres are responsible for coordinating the care of critically ill patients and may be located in the intensive care unit or in a dedicated critical care unit.
  6. Bed management command centres: These centres are responsible for managing the allocation of beds and other resources within the hospital and may be used to coordinate patient flow and optimize the use of hospital resources.

Overall, the type of hospital command centre will depend on the specific needs of the hospital and the types of emergencies and crises it is most likely to encounter.


Another useful classification of these centres is based on the technology stack:

  • A separate facility like the flight control centres
  • Integrated into existing technologies and using more handheld or portable devices and more integrated into the existing hospital infrastructure
  • A hybrid of the above two options.


There are several advantages to having a hospital command centre:

  1. Improved patient care: By coordinating and managing the response to emergencies and crises, hospital command centres can help ensure that patients receive timely and appropriate care.
  2. Enhanced communication: Command centres typically have advanced communication systems that allow hospital staff to quickly and effectively communicate with each other and with other hospitals and emergency services.
  3. Greater efficiency: Command centres can help hospitals optimize the allocation of resources and streamline processes, leading to greater efficiency and effectiveness.
  4. Better preparedness: By having a dedicated space for managing emergencies and crises, hospitals can be better prepared to respond to unexpected events.
  5. Improved safety: Command centres can help hospitals identify and address potential safety hazards, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.

These centres can help improve patient care, communication, efficiency, preparedness, and safety within a hospital.


Some of the challenges that hospital command centres may face include:

  1. Funding: Establishing and maintaining a hospital command centre can be costly, and securing funding can be a challenge.
  2. Staffing: It can be difficult to find and retain qualified staff to work in command centres, especially in rural or underserved areas.
  3. Coordination: Command centres may need to coordinate with a wide range of stakeholders, including other hospitals, emergency services, and government agencies. This can be challenging, especially in the event of a large-scale emergency.

It has advanced communication and information systems and is staffed by trained emergency management professionals.
  2. The Emergency Operations centre at Cleveland Clinic, US: This centre is responsible for coordinating the hospital's response to emergencies and crises, including natural disasters, pandemics, and mass casualty events. It has advanced communication and information systems and is staffed by trained emergency management professionals.
  3. The Emergency Department Command centre at UCLA Medical centre, US: This centre is located in the emergency department and is responsible for coordinating the care of patients with urgent or emergent needs. It has advanced communication and information systems and is staffed by trained emergency management professionals.
  4. The Trauma Command centre at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, US: This centre is responsible for coordinating the care of patients with traumatic injuries and is located in the hospital's trauma unit. It has advanced communication and information systems and is staffed by trained trauma care professionals.
  5. The Johns Hopkins Medicine Command centre is a centralized facility that is responsible for coordinating the response to emergencies and crises within the Johns Hopkins Medicine healthcare system. The Command centre is located at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, US, and is staffed by trained emergency management professionals. It has advanced communication and information systems that allow hospital staff to monitor and track the status of patients, allocate resources, and coordinate with other hospitals and emergency services. The Command centre is an important part of the hospital's overall emergency management and disaster response plan and is designed to ensure the best possible care for patients in the event of an emergency or crisis.
  6. Bradford Royal Infirmary, United Kingdom: The Bradford Royal Infirmary's command centre, known as the Patient Flow Centre, was established in 2018. It uses real-time data and analytics to monitor bed availability, coordinate patient discharges, and streamline patient transfers between wards, ultimately reducing patient wait times and improving overall efficiency.
  7. Humber River Hospital, Canada: The Humber River Hospital in Toronto, Canada, implemented a command centre in 2015 to improve patient care and hospital operations. The centre uses predictive analytics and real-time data to optimize patient flow, resource allocation, and overall operational efficiency.
  8. The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, United Kingdom: In 2020, The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust launched its command centre to streamline patient flow, reduce wait times, and optimize hospital resources. The centre's digital tools and analytics help staff to make data-driven decisions, improving patient care and overall hospital performance.
  9. St. Stephen's Hospital, Australia: St. Stephen's Hospital in Queensland, Australia, implemented a command centre known as the eHealth Centre in 2014. The centre integrates electronic health records, real-time patient monitoring, and telemedicine capabilities to improve patient care and streamline hospital operations.
  10. King's College Hospital, United Kingdom: King's College Hospital in London launched its Command Centre in 2020. It uses data and analytics to support clinical decision-making, improve patient flow, and reduce patient wait times. The centre is also designed to help the hospital manage and respond to critical incidents or major events more effectively.
  11. Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Qatar: Hamad Medical Corporation, the principal public healthcare provider in Qatar, established a System Wide Incident Command Centre (SWICC) to enhance patient flow and hospital operations across their network of hospitals. The SWICC aims to optimize bed management, coordinate patient transfers, and manage hospital resources more efficiently.
  12. Sidra Medicine, Qatar: Sidra Medicine, a women's and children's hospital in Doha, Qatar, has implemented a state-of-the-art command centre to improve patient care and hospital operations. The centre uses real-time data and analytics to optimize patient flow, manage resources, and support clinical decision-making.

Despite their usefulness, the implementation and operation of these command centres are surrounded by several myths and misconceptions. Some of these myths include:


  1. Only for large hospitals: Many people assume that command and control centres are only suitable for large hospitals. In reality, they can be tailored to fit hospitals of all sizes and can provide significant benefits in terms of operational efficiency and patient care.
  2. Too expensive: Some believe that these centres are cost-prohibitive. While the initial investment may be significant, the long-term benefits, including reduced patient wait times, increased staff efficiency, and improved patient outcomes, can outweigh the costs.
  3. Replace human decision-making: Another myth is that command and control centres will replace human decision-making in hospitals. In reality, these centres augment human decision-making by providing real-time data and analytics, helping healthcare professionals make more informed decisions.
  4. Limited to emergency situations: Some may think that command centres are only useful during emergency situations or disaster response. While they do play a critical role in such cases, they are also valuable for day-to-day hospital operations, helping to coordinate and optimize patient care.

This is great- good job Sukhmeet Panesar and Christian Nielsen for creating this overview. You alluded to it in the post, but from a user experience point of view (being a patient in a hospital), I would love to see how CCCs can drive a more holistic view on one’s visit to a hospital. A patient goes through so many different touch points during their visit, and making that a, not just efficient, but seamless experience is challenging I imagine. From a technology point of view, I believe CCCs lowers the barrier to entry for adopting new technology given its centralized nature, which I find exciting. I look forward to read the future articles in the series!
