Safety, Mindfulness, and the Workplace
Last week I listed out the 12 types of safety. This week, I'd like to discuss how mindfulness cultivates safety and its impact in the workplace.
Life is consisted of a series of moments, built one on top of the other. If we are busy fixating on the past or future, we forget about the only thing that matters: Now.
In today's hustle culture, the workplace can cause a lot of undue stress and anxiety. From countless meetings & looming deadlines to the constant influx of emails, our mind is constantly on high alert, leaving no room to slow down and thus causing burn out. Although we may be physically present, we are rarely mentally present and this erodes the relationships we have. However, if we learn to incorporate mindfulness into our daily life, we can transform our relationships, improve productivity, and create a healthier work-life balance.
What is Mindfulness?
Although there is no universally accepted definition of mindfulness, it generally refers to being fully aware of the current moment and being engaged in a non-judgemental, nonreactive, curious, and open-hearted way. When mindful, we are able to observe our internal state (thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, etc.) and external world, without acting on our emotions and impulses.
"Shapiro et al. (2006) posit that attention, intention, and attitude are the three most important components of mindfulness, and paying attention to one’s experience can lead to changes in perspective, what has been referred to as decentering." - Jonathan Gibson (Mindfulness, Interoception, and the Body: A Contemporary Perspective)
As paraphrased in A study on the relationship between mindfulness and work performance of web editors: Based on the chain mediating effect of workplace spirituality and digital competencies, mindfulness can be further described as a set of skills, including:
Mindfulness in essence, is living life through a beginner's mind and requires contemplative cultivation, developed over time. This can be done through various practices such as: meditation, yoga, or focused attention. The sheer goal is to maintain absolute attention towards stimuli (external or internal) in a non-judgemental way; it is complete detachment and observing of the self and its surroundings (both internal and external). To the untrained eye, this may start to sound ludicrous and border "woowoo" discussions but to anyone who has experienced mindfulness, this is perhaps the most profound tool we can have to begin changing the course of our life.
Benefits of Mindfulness
Mindfulness affects us in four different ways:
***Note for my nerdy readers: Mindfulness increases grey matter in the right anterior insula (which helps with interoceptive awareness), left inferior temporal gyrus (which helps with combining information, studying languages, visual sensing), and the left postcentral gyrus (which helps us process the world through our senses). This focuses solely on mindfulness, and has not even began touching on meditation and its benefits!!!

Mindfulness, Safety, and the Workplace
Mindfulness builds interoception/ interoceptive awareness which shifts us to focus on our internal landscape (thoughts, bodily sensations, feelings, etc.). When we are grounded in the present moment, we can better choose how to react in situations. When we choose compassion and kindness, it cultivates safety in the relationships we build. This application in the workplace can yield powerful results.
Although the benefits of mindfulness and meditation are still new to the corporate space, I do believe that now, more than ever before, it is crucial that we begin to adopt these processes into our daily routines.
With our rapid advancing technology, it is easy to forget that we require time for our brain to rest and relax, despite how counterintuitive that may sound. However, it is through moments of rest that allow us to recharge so that we can be more efficient.
