Safety Week

Safety Week

At NIQC we wish all our Students and Staff a very Safe year ahead as we celebrate Safety Week.

Safety and Lean go hand in hand. Most of the concepts of Lean have employee welfare in mind contrary to the belief that Lean advocates cutting down on employees.

Lean believes in employee empowerment and providing them a safe atmosphere to work in.

5S is a very important concept we learn in Lean which deals with the Safety and Wellness of the worker.

5S is an abbreviation for the concepts of Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain.

Here we talk about how at any workplace it is of key importance to keep all the work tools sorted in such a way that it is easy to set them in order so that it is easier to find and replace while working thereby bringing down the time spent in searching for tools. It also avoids leaving tools unattended in someplace thereby causing potential danger zones.

Once we have sorted and set in order all our work items we have to ensure that the entire work area is shined or otherwise kept clean. This helps us by bringing positivity to our minds which are now as uncluttered as the area we work in. A clean and healthy workplace makes a happy worker.

Once this is all done the best way to ensure this is not a flash in the pan is to standardize our operations by creating an SOP around this which has to be adhered to as well as creating a checklist that will make it possible for this improvement to be sustained.

Thus will 5S ensure we are all safe and secure as we forge ahead.
