What’s on at the cinema this summer? Everything you want to see!

Whether you’re in search of a great ice cream or just some air conditioning, the cinema is a great refuge in the summer. For a couple of hours, you can stop worrying about applying sunscreen and be swept away by the sights and sounds coming from the big screen.

This summer’s programme is genuinely exciting, too – here are six of the films on our current must-see list:

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

The ever-wonderful Emma Thompson stars as a widow seeking a new lease on life – and good sex! – via a series of encounters with sex worker Leo Grande. 

An unapologetic celebration of pleasure, human connection, and self-discovery, Sophie Hyde’s comedy-drama is a solid argument for not letting anything hold you back, and it’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Nope

Something terrifying is coming… and it’s a new film from director Jordan Peele! It’s set at a horse-training ranch in Hollywood, stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, and knowing anything more than that about it might spoil the fun. 

(Though if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like going into a scary film without knowing what you’re letting yourself in for, there have been some in-depth trailer analyses that have turned up some interesting things…)

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris

Another tale of a widow realising that it’s never too late to follow her dreams. Mrs Harris Goes To Paris sees Lesley Manville, as the titular Mrs Harris, travelling to France in search of a Dior dress she’s set her heart on. 

Set in the 1950s, it’s a nostalgic comedy directed by Anthony Fabian that sees its heroine head off on the journey of a lifetime. Très charmant.

Bullet Train

John Wick director David Leitch is back with another all-out action movie. Here, five assassins – played by Brad Pitt, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Yyree Henry, and Andrew Koji – find themselves competing to get to their targets on a high-speed train travelling between Tokyo and Kyoto. Will any of them make it off alive? Expect high drama, eye-popping stunts, and plenty of surprises.

Where The Crawdads Sing

In Olivia Newman’s adaptation of Delia Owens’s bestselling novel, a young girl teaches herself self-reliance after being abandoned in the wilds of North Carolina… but her troubles don’t end there. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kya, a woman accused of murder after her abusive ex is found dead in this compelling, haunting mystery.

Intrigued? Taylor Swift was – she loved the book, and wrote an original song for the film’s soundtrack.

Don’t Worry Darling

Everything looks perfect in the small 1950s town of Victory… but this is a psychological thriller, so you know there’s going to be something sinister going on beneath that shiny surface. 

Director Olivia Wilde and writer Katie Silberman reteam for this one, following their acclaimed comedy Booksmart, but this is going to be a very different beast. It’s got a fantastic cast, including Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, and Wilde herself. We’ve got a feeling we’re going to want to talk about this one a lot…
