"Scaling Your Business"
Over the past few years of enterprise business learning I heard an echoing term that stuck out time and time again... “scaling your business.” This simple term seems to have different meanings to professionals depending on the context of their; goals, strategy, and function of their businesses. Most professionals would agree that a business is able to scale their operations if they are able to handle a growing amount of work or sales in a capable, cost-effective manner.
This systematic approach to success is very linear in nature because it requires a business to specialize its efforts into a defined space. This way a company can handle relatively as much work as humanly possible in a given field and of course can grow more rapidly because of this cause & effect.
As my understanding of scaling has grown over the past few years I have become far more grateful for the business process a company defines and runs with. This simple discipline of saying “no” is not only a skill but also an art form in many ways. Of course “no,” the most powerful two letter word in the English vocabulary would give rise to definition and structure. In return, our “yes” becomes strengthened and far more genuine when delivered as a solution to a client. We exist in a business to do our best right now to manage the “yes” of what we think the business should be. However, most often we did not experience the hardships and pain of that very difficult steep cliff face that was free climbed in our business infancy.
All of this information is of course far easier to understand than to accomplish. Which is why I think we should redefine business scaling in it’s more natural and truer form of….
“to climb up a steep surface, such as a wall or the side of a mountain, often using special equipment.”
This perspective is humbling but also allows for many more helpful thoughts and service oriented ideas and functions. Many of which we are all trying to figure out on a daily basis. This final quarter should challenge us all appropriately…. May your “no’s” be plentiful and may your “yes” be your word and your bond!
