Scripting Work Experience: Workplays
by Hazel Edwards OAM
It’s difficult for some educators to organise work experience for students. First hand experience ‘on the job’ is best. But using scripts to role- play in mocked-up work settings links drama, literacy and also provides facts. Plus the scripts can be used in addition to actual placement. Careers teachers are reassured that there are curriculum links, lots of activities and HUMOUR. Casual teachers will find the scripts engaging students even if lacking time to mock up settings.
As a former teacher, I was aware of students who struggled with reading but who were good problem solvers ‘on the job’. They liked the challenge of fixing things or being part of a group working together. Fine at following other ways of learning. These scripts offer various way of learning, in action. And students can start creating their own.
As a ‘vintage’ author, I’ve written fiction and non-fiction for all ages, but because of my original teacher training, I like the challenge of crafting ‘useful’ scripts which are reality based. I learn new subjects, like the range of jobs available in settings such as a hospital. It’s not all nurses and doctors. Most students don’t know there are jobs for plumbers , security and electricians too. And using a workplace setting like the law courts for role playing, means insight into who goes there and why. Especially relevant for those wanting to get and keep drivers’ licences. And you can mock up the setting of the local major employer in the area with the relevant job roles.
I’ve written in many genres but there’s satisfaction in making information accessible to those with short attention spans also. Crafting humour across the facts and letting the role-playing actors have fun but be more observant of their surrounds, is a challenge I enjoy.
‘Teaching and writing are complementary ideas professions. Deceptively simple writing is the hardest but also very satisfying. And easy-to-read and simple performance scripts can involve the students and they have fun. Multi purpose.’

Amba Press had already approached me about re-issuing and updating several of my proven classroom scripts. ‘Grief and Loss in Schools’ and ‘Issues’ had been well received. But ‘Workplays’ is an especially useful resource for time-poor educators who want to give students broad experiences and awareness of local opportunities.
