Setting the tone for a business-friendly 2025!

The Eurochambres end of year cocktail reception in Brussels on 10 December brought together nearly 200 key players from the chamber network and the EU policy sphere. The event came at the end of a year characterised by political transition at EU level. It was an opportunity to look back on 12 months of cooperation between the #chambernetwork and policymakers and to set the tone for 2025 and the new #EU term.

Newly appointed European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen , delivered an inspiring speech that underscored the critical role of Eurochambres in contributing to the EU policy agenda and the commitment of the Ursula von der Leyen II Commission to strengthening Europe’s competitiveness. Eurochambres President, Vladimír Dlouhý, insisted on the need for the new EU term to deliver substantive measures that will be positively felt by Europe’s entrepreneurs.

As we approach the end of 2024, Eurochambres expresses sincere gratitude to its members and partners for their ongoing support and engagement in advocating for and contributing to a business-friendly EU policy environment. This cooperation will be even more important throughout 2025, when the tone must be set for an EU five year term that builds on Mario Draghi’s analysis and enables our companies to invest, innovate, employ and grow.

60 suggestions for EU regulatory burden reduction

Simplification of the regulatory framework to support EU #competitiveness has rightly been identified as a top priority for the new mandate. While this establishes an encouraging narrative, Eurochambres highlights the urgency of taking immediate, substantive action to relieve businesses from unsustainable compliance burdens.

The message from the meeting of Eurochambres Board of Directors on 10 December was clear: the EU needs to radically simplify the complex EU regulatory framework and align it more closely with the needs of businesses if we are to foster a competitive economy. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss Eurochambres’ 60 specific simplification recommendations with the Swedishard Member of the European Parliament and President of SME Europe , Jörgen Warborn , who highlighted the need to tackle both reporting and compliance burdens.

Making ESG reporting more business friendly

Five years into the European Green Deal, businesses across Europe are struggling with an increasingly complex regulatory environment that threatens their competitiveness.

Speaking at the Economic Summit of Baden-Württemberg on 4 December, Levin Spiegel , Eurochambres Policy Advisor for Sustainability, highlighted key challenges posed by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD): overly granular data requirements, overlapping regulations, and the costly burden of data collection across value chains. He also addressed the issue of indirect reporting obligations placed on smaller companies within value chains. Mr. Spiegel called for streamlined and coherent reporting frameworks, alongside the introduction of a voluntary reporting standard for non-reporting companies, embedded as a value chain cap within the CSRD.
