Distractions don't just hurt our focus - distractions steal hundreds of dollars from our pockets every day.
Today’s work environment brings constant distraction. Always being “on”. Being ready at a moment’s notice to respond to an email, Zoom meeting, or Slack request.
But there’s a real price to be paid. One thing I’ve learned over decades of trying to get things done in business is, focus and silence builds success. Yeah, silence. Like compound interest, quiet, undistracted work multiplies both our financial and mental returns.
Cal Newport, author of the great book Deep Work says,
“What we choose to focus on and what we choose to ignore, plays in defining the quality of our life.”
Our brains operate like high-performance engines. Every interruption is like throwing sand in the gas tank. Each time that happens we have to stop, clean the engine, and start again.
High-performing businesspeople know this secret - they guard their quiet time like it’s their most valuable asset.
Success doesn't happen in meetings or email chains. It happens in the precious hours of laser-like focus.
Here’s four ways that helped me learn to focus, get more done, and have great results - and if can work for me, someone who has the attention span of an insect, they can work for you:
One other tool I find helpful: I pick a deep focus playlist from Spotify and play it during my quiet blocks. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but I’ve found the sounds kind of wall off the outside and envelop me.
Even just the sounds of ocean waves can help.
So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: Set up your quiet boundaries and let everyone know. Then, step through the checklist I recommended.
Your most productive hours aren't measured in volume, but in silence. Success doesn't require complicated strategies. Success simply needs our commitment to creating space for clear thinking.
Start small, stay consistent, and watch your results multiply.
