Shit happens! Do you give a shit? We have to give a shit! -Testing an EcoTipper Prototype with a tipping bowl for a batch of "wastewater"!

We at BACKLUND ECOLOGY are looking so much forward in a cooperation with the swedish company Wostman Ecology to test and to further develop a prototype with our working title "EcoTipper".

We are so happy and feel so privilliged at Backlund Ecology to have been given opportunity to rethink and the reinvent toilets and sanitary streams following our early work from 1986 - 1990 with technical solutions to and organizing handling systems for streams and materials in the textile and garnment industry.

"From Eton Systems AB Fashion Production Systems to BACKLUND ECOLOGY Ecological Sanitation - from a shirt to shit - pee cycling & poo cycling systems! Working with our new Backlund Ecology Home Page and our company history I came upon a video. Cooperating and representing the Swedish company Eton Systems AB from 1986 - 1990 in Eastern Europe was very productive generating big sales but also very inspiring transferring the ideas - from producing a shirt efficiently without waste from fabric to a ready made shirt - to rethinking sanitation changing toilets and sanitation to sustainable ecological sanitation producing free human organic fertilizer and soil amendments linking - in a metabolic shift - to agroecology and permaculture. Thank you Eton Systems AB for a wonderful cooperation. You have been mentioned so often when I have been guest lecturing around the world. Enjoy the video!"

For 30 years we have now been working with metabolism and rethinking and reinventing toilets as important instruments as waterless or ultra water saving preferable diverting instruments or tools in a metabolic shift returning human urine/pee/piss as an excellent organic fertilizer and human feces/poo/shit as nutrients and soil amendment from table to soil.

We have cooperated with Wostman Ecology since the early 1990ties and BACKLUND ECOLOGY have tested many different types of ultra water saving toilets, diverting or not and including many versions of vacuum toilets and vacuum toilet systems in many projects and in many countries. Many of those you can find on our homepage backlund.dk

At BACKLUND ECOLOGY we have also worked in an international cooperation to reduce water usage to reduce the total "wastewater" stream from househoulds not only to sewers but also since 1991/1992 to closed systems as On-Site Zero Discharge Willow Wastewater Evapotranspiration Systems.

In projects we have tested, shown and further developed toilets and toilet systems enabling more concentrated nutrients to be used as local fertilizers, dry material to be used for local composting or anaerobic combustion (biogas) or just for saving drinking water before entering sewers.

But Shit happens and could shit, paper and urine (separate or together) be transported in existing pipes and sewers and in coming piping without pumping? It is a challenge in itself to flush with very low flush volumes and it could be difficult by gravity in pipes and sewers without pumping to have shit, paper and more to reach their wanted destination instead of having material stuck, blocking and contained in the pipes or sewers.

In one of our many early Danish EPA The National Danish Environmental Protection Agency Projects - "Project M226-0028 Composting and Maturing of Human Feces and Toilet paper Contained in Drained Blackwater" for a county we tested two different types of ultra low flush toilets - EcoVip/Clever (EcoTipper) and EcoFlush - with piping to two dewatering and composting units with filters - Kaggen - with outlet to a On-Site Zero Discharge Willow Evapotranspiration System.

The idea with the diverting ultra low flush EcoVip/Clever/EcoTipper toilet was having a bowl in the bottom of the toilet filled with 0, 5 litres of water, shit, urine and paper and then tipped by pressing af foot pedal on the toilet. We could not make the toilet work properly and it was to difficult to clean. Shit Happens!

Working sanitary and toilet history at BACKLUND ECOLOGY in projects and participating and giving input to museum exhibitions it is interesting to look at historic Tipper Toilets as below.

We gave up improving the Tipper Toilet but were still fascinated by usage of a tipper function. We went on thinking about making use of containing water, shit, paper and urine in a bowl before releasing to a piping system in order to save water and to get more concentrated dry material in the streams.

Here our state of the art from 2010 and the drawings and work leading to the present prototype to be tested in 2021.

We at BACKLUND ECOLOGY are so happy that the cooperation with Wostman Ecology not only has brought us ultra low flush toilets like EcoFlush and Vacuum-On-Demand Vacuum toilet systems but now also a prototype of a container with a bowl and a tipping mechanism tipping batches of aprox 11 litres into a piping system not to have shit and paper stuck o the road.

We are already starting mentioning our coming device nationally and internationally and wehope that many will join us on the road for testing in projects and many finally bying the unit in concepts with sustainable sanitation.

We will now look for money, locations and cooperation to start testing the prototype in projects and should we fail (hopefully not) or even without failing why not put it in an art gallery dispositioned and displaced as a "state of the art" with a number as art as Marcel Duchamp did it with a urinal back in history in 1917 called "Fountain" contributing to change ideas about art:-)
