A sign from the universe.

A sign from the universe.

A coaching client joined a new firm. In spite of its successful track record and his history with the partners, he was getting the feeling this was not an enjoyable place to work.

I told him the universe was sending him a message. It was time for alternate career planning.

Another client had been in career transition for almost nine months when he landed a one-year contract. Three months in, he realized this wasn't where he wanted to stay.

I told him he was lucky he figured that out now. He had nine months on their payroll to find the right employer.

A third worked at his company for over 20 years. He was dissatisfied and had developed a passion in a new field. But he was discouraged and felt he couldn't leave.

I told him this was good news. In spite of his doubts, all he had to do was get started.

The marketplace is shifting quickly. There are three career change signs the universe sends:

  1.  Discomfort or dis-ease within your organization, your department or you.
  2. An impending event (re-org, budget cuts) that may affect you.
  3. The Friday afternoon chat or email that advises you're done.

This week's tip: Change is inevitable. It happens intrinsically (you decide) or extrinsically (the universe decides).Do we need to chat before your only option is signal #3?
