On occasion, SHC Speaks showcases associates that represent Sears Holdings’ commitment to our members and the community. In today’s spotlight, we would like to introduce Mitzi Jones, who recently celebrated her 50th anniversary with Kmart.
In August, Mitzi’s 50-year milestone was featured in the Journal-Times, located in Grayson, Kentucky, by Tim Preston where she described her journey, “50 years on the job.”
“I worked all my life,” she said enthusiastically, noting her early jobs included farm work such as harvesting tobacco and strawberries.
“I walked three miles a day for a dollar a day to babysit five kids,” she said, then added her early jobs included duty at an uncle’s truck stop in Globe, working from noon to midnight seven days a week for a $15 paycheck.
“We figured that out – it was a nickel an hour,” she said, chuckling.
Mitzi continued on her experience throughout the Journal-Times article, describing her time with Kmart.
“I was never much on the sales floor,” she said, recalling her various job titles including roles in human resources, administration and inventory management.”
“They gave me a stool to sit on and I work four hours a day,” she said, explaining she plans to report for work “As long as the good lord lets me breathe and I can get there.” *
We are proud to have Mitzi on the Kmart team and congratulate her on her years of service with the company. SHC Speaks had a chance to speak with Mitzi recently on her career with Kmart.
How did you get your start with Kmart?
I was babysitting at the time, when I ran into a friend of mine. She said she was just hired at Kmart and that I should apply. So I went down to the Cincinnati, Ohio, Kmart store and applied. Next thing I know, I am working overnight in the cash office.
What type of roles have you had with Kmart?
I’ve done everything. I handled damaged products, which was my least favorite job, in Hamilton, Ohio. I had the opportunity to work in the appliance warehouse in Wyoming, Ohio, where I handled store orders to inventorying the product. I really liked working there. I had the best time. My district manager (DM) would come in all the time. In fact, a lot of people came in for meetings here all the time.
When my husband and I moved to Kentucky, I worked in personnel at 3315. When I told my DM I was moving, he handed me a letter and told me to hand it directly to the store manager once we made it to Kentucky. That day, I was hired into personnel where I spent quite a bit of time.
From there I became a supervisor on the front end. Right now, I am a cashier. They let me sit on a stool and I can work three days a week, which helps with my arthritis.
What was your favorite role?
That would have to be my role in HR. I loved it. I hired some really great people in my years in personnel. Some are still with Kmart and others have moved on, but all were great people. In fact, a Pharmacy technician who I hired years ago is still with Kmart as a Pharmacy district manager.
I really like the role I am in now. I feel like I can be myself when I assist the members and work with others. Everyone here at the Grayson Kmart is great to work with.
Do you have plans to retire in the near future?
No, I don’t think so. I think I will work at least two to three days a week as long as the good Lord allows it.
What made you decide to build a career with Kmart?
My sister asked me that too. And I just said, “Why not?”
We also had an opportunity to speak with Mitzi’s Store Manager, Evelyn Watts about Mitzi’s anniversary milestone.
What is it like working with Mitzi?
It’s a real pleasure having her here. It’s been an honor working with her. She is always outstanding in all areas.
How is your store impacted by Mitzi?
Mitzi is a leader. She always exceeds goals, whether its credit cards, donations, smart plans, she is always on top. And she always works with other associates to help them reach their goals. She is an asset for sure!
