Social Media Industry Round-Up #27: Refreshing TikTok’s Algorithm, Launching Meta Verified, Opting Out Twitter Ads & Tips for Pinterest Ads

Every week, the Marketing team at The Social Shepherd puts together all the relevant industry updates in a round-up newsletter sent every Monday morning.

This way, we keep our team, clients and interested marketers up to date with what's going on in the social media industry :)

Don't forget to subscribe if you want to be updated every Monday.

Refresh Your TikTok Algorithmic Recommendations: TikTok is launching a new feature that will enable users to start over with feed recommendations by resetting what the algorithm thinks a user might be interested in.

This will be useful when recommendations aren’t relevant anymore, or users want a bit of variety on their For You feed.

Updated TikTok Community Guidelines: TikTok has updated its community guidelines, and the point that has stood out for us is the section about ‘Synthetic and Manipulated Media’, which covers the rise of AI content.

Essentially TikTok is asking creators to disclose when the content has been created by artificial intelligence, so it helps users distinguish between fact and fiction. They suggest using a sticker or caption, such as ‘synthetic’, ‘fake’, ‘not real’, or ‘altered’.

New Instagram Ads Options: Instagram has announced two new ad formats to promote launches on the platform.

Reminder Ads

Opt into alerts about specific events in the app. People that opt into reminders will receive three notifications from Instagram one day before, 15 minutes before, and at the time of the event.

Ads in Search

Ads will appear in the feed that people can scroll when tapping into a post from search results.

Meta Launches ‘Meta Verified’ in the US: A few weeks ago, we announced that Meta is launching a paid verified program for Instagram & Facebook users, which has some useful benefits. This last week was finally launched in the US.

Priority Ranking for Tweet Replies from Twitter Blue: It doesn’t come as a surprise that those users with a Twitter Blue subscription (paid verified account) will get priority ranking for their replies. This means that, in the coming weeks, Twitter will prioritise replies by:

  1. People you follow
  2. Verified accounts
  3. Unverified accounts

Opt-Out of TikTok Ads: Twitter is working on a new option that would allow users to opt out of ads in specific sensitive categories. So far, there’s only one option available, Gambling, but soon they’ll introduce Alcohol, Guns, and more.

This new section will be accessible from the ‘Ads Preferences’ page.

Twitter Bookmark Count to Details View: Twitter has launched a new feature that will allow users to see the total number of times a Tweet has been bookmarked on Tweet details.

Thumbnails for YouTube Shorts on iOS: YouTube is finally allowing iOS creators to choose a frame from their clip as their thumbnail when uploading Shorts, a feature that Android creators could access since December.

New Ad Pin Tips: Pinterest has provided a few tips on effective Pin advertising based on brand lift studies and feedback from Pinners. The key tips are:

  • Experiment with multiple objectives
  • Upweight your spend towards video
  • Keep your campaign feeling fresh
  • Take a holistic approach to measurement
