South Korean container line HMM is claiming success with its series of 24,000 teu containerships with all of the newbuildings “full” with cargo carryi
When the series of 24,000 teu boxships started to be delivered earlier this year there were concerns over the timing as the market was hitting a deep slump due to Covid-19. However, lines have aggressively managed capacity through blank sailings and focus ultra-large vessels resulting a in a far better market than had been feared.
With a nominal capacity of 24,000 teu the series are the largest containerships in the world to date, however, factors such as cargo weight and stability mean the actual number of loaded containers such vessels can carry is significantly less than the nominal capacity. According to HMM the maximum loadable capacity stands at around 19,300 teu.
HMM declared that all 12 newbuildings were fully laden on their maiden voyages with the final vessel the HMM St Petersburg departing Yantian, China for Europe on 30 September with 19,529 teu onboard. All 12 newbuilds carried in the range of 19,459 teu to 19,621 teu on their first voyages from Asia to Europe.
