Spanish market growing as Altenar heads to ICE 2025

The iGaming world will converge on Barcelona in January and the Altenar team will be in attendance as ICE is held in Spain for the first time.

The exhibition has moved from its traditional home in London and will now take place at the Fira Barcelona Gran Via, where around 55,000 attendees are expected to visit over the three days of the conference on January 20-22.

As part of the build-up to ICE 2025, Altenar recently published a market report analysing the current state of the gambling industry in Spain. The report highlights a bumper year for operators in 2023, with gross gambling revenue increasing by 28.4%, which was the largest year-on-year rise since 2017.

That growth has continued in 2024, with data released by the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) in September showing GGR of €346.3m in the second quarter of the year - an increase of 10.79% on the same period last year.

Marketing spend in the Spanish betting industry has also increased, helped by the Supreme Court partly upholding an appeal over advertising restrictions in April. The appeal, brought by the Spanish Digital Gaming Association (Jdigital), overturned bans on the following:

  • The use of celebrities in gambling advertising
  • Marketing at players who have held an account for less than 30 days
  • Advertising on video sharing platforms (e,g. YouTube)
  • Advertising on social media for users over the age of 18

This continued growth means Spain remains one of the biggest iGaming markets in Europe, with operators allowed to do business without many of the restrictions in place in other countries.

Sales Manager Alejandro Cazorla is part of the Altenar team heading to ICE 2025 in Barcelona and believes there is plenty of reason for optimism in the Spanish market.

He said: “I am excited to see the online Spanish iGaming market continue flourishing. The shift to more flexible marketing regulations has sparked impressive growth and innovation, so it’s an exciting time for the industry in Spain.”

He has also welcomed the switch of venue to Barcelona, which is preparing to welcome members of the iGaming industry from all over the world.

“In my opinion, the move of ICE to Barcelona is a fantastic step forward,” added Alejandro. “It brings the event closer to the heart of Europe, making it much easier for European suppliers to showcase their innovative solutions and connect with a broader audience. It’s a win for the industry!”

ICE 2025 kicks off another busy year of exhibitions in the iGaming industry and the Altenar team will be based at stand 5L18, ready to discuss your needs. Whether it is a turnkey sportsbook, a white-label operation or a retail solution, Altenar can help your brand grow in 2025 and beyond.

A number of exciting new features have been rolled out in 2024, including new horse racing and esports verticals with standalone lobbies. A unique bet acceptance logic has improved the user experience when it comes to live betting, while promotional tools such as Betslip Boost and improved Bet Builders have given more power than ever to operators.

There is much more to come in 2025 and Alejandro is excited by the plans for the next 12 months.

He said: “2024 has been an incredible year for Altenar - opening new markets, achieving record revenues, and laying the foundation for even greater success. With this momentum, 2025 promises to be our best year yet! We are looking forward to continuing to help our partners thrive in their markets.”
