Spooky, Creative, and Community-Building: How a Spooky Tradition Inspires Personal and Professional Growth

Spooky, Creative, and Community-Building: How a Spooky Tradition Inspires Personal and Professional Growth

Every year, as autumn settles in, my church community takes on a slightly different vibe to the one you may expect.

Laughter echoes through the halls, creativity flows freely, and a pinch of spookiness lingers in the air. It's the season of our 'Trunk or Treat' event, and it's nothing short of magical.

For those not familiar, 'Trunk or Treat' is a Halloween tradition in our community, where members of our ward, our church's equivalent of a parish, assemble in the church parking lot with their car boots (or trunks) creatively decorated in various Halloween, spooky or just plain creative themes.

Then, local children from the neighbourhood, along with the children from our congregation, embark on a safe and fun-filled trick-or-treating adventure, moving from one decorated car boot to the next.

Yes, this is my youngest the year he wanted to be Nyan Cat. Yes, I made that costume. You're right, almost nobody (apart from the children and youth) knew who he was.

In the spirit of togetherness, it's a tradition that has grown to be much more than just a Halloween party. 'Trunk or Treat' is a chance for the entire community to bond, for our church members to showcase their creativity, and for children to enjoy a spooky but safe Halloween experience.

The creativity and effort poured into these decorations are awe-inspiring, turning our church's parking lot into a Halloween wonderland and people come from neighbouring towns to visit year after year, because of the fun they have had with us.

That, I think, is what makes this event truly special. The sense of community.

From our seasoned churchgoers to new visitors, 'Trunk or Treat' is an opportunity for everyone to connect and share a good time. As the event includes a costume competition, a cook-off, and a dessert competition along with various other activities, there is a lot to do. And that's without visiting each car to chat with friends or even just standing in the middle of the car park chatting to friends and family as I have done for several years!

My eldest went as a haunted doll one Halloween and frightened the judges so much when she was found sitting in a corner, that they awarded her first place in the costume competition.

I don't think that the magic ends when the published end time rolls around either. Every year, what really warms my heart is the sense of togetherness during the cleanup. After the last piece of candy has been distributed and the last costume admired, we come together to clean up.

We sweep, vacuum, wash dishes, and make sure our church is left spotless, and ready for the next day's services or activities. We share the leftovers and laughter, a continuation of the spirit of community that defines our church.

Yet, there's one more aspect that adds an extra layer of excitement to our 'Trunk or Treat' tradition. One that sort of goes against the spirit of community, but is something that my competitive soul LOVES.

It's the friendly rivalry our family shares with another family in the ward, over who will win the prize for the best-decorated/most creative car boot.

The annual contest keeps us on our toes, with my family thinking about what we're going to create from the 1st of November the previous year! The friendly competition (Really, it is. Even though as most of you may have worked out by now I'm very competitive!) has led to some of the most imaginative and interactive trunk decorations.

Over the years, we've conjured up 'a bear in a cave,' 'a haunted house,' and even 'Boo's door from Monster's Inc,' complete with a giant doll that sent shivers down the spines of unsuspecting trick-or-treaters.

We've had a magic mirror that could tell you your fortune or reveal the truth to a question you asked.

The scary man behind the mirror!

We've had hands pulling you down into a pit of balls and our friends/competitors have had amazing snapping crocodiles and giant mouths for wannabe dentists to pull teeth from.

A scary hand waving a sweet!

Trunk or Treat' may seem like a simple Halloween tradition, but in reality, it showcases the power of community building and creativity. These elements are also vital in the professional world.

Just like we decorate our trunks with creativity and compete to make them stand out, your personal brand needs a unique touch to stand out in a competitive market. The effort and creativity you invest in your personal brand can create a lasting impression and set you apart from the competition.

Building a strong personal brand is about more than just your skills and qualifications; it's about how you express your uniqueness. Just as each car trunk tells a different story at 'Trunk or Treat,' your personal brand should tell a compelling story that captures the essence of who you are.

Moreover, the sense of community at 'Trunk or Treat' is a reflection of how building relationships can be a cornerstone of personal and professional growth. Just as 'Trunk or Treat' brings our church community together, networking and connecting with others are essential in your professional journey.

Finally, our annual friendly rivalry at 'Trunk or Treat' shows that a little competition can be motivating and lead to incredible results. Similarly, in the business world, a competitive edge can drive you to achieve your goals and outshine your competitors.

So, as we prepare for another year of 'Trunk or Treat,' we do so with the anticipation and excitement that make our community so special.

If you have a stripey jumpsuit, of course you're going to dress up as Beetlejuice!

This tradition exemplifies how creativity, community, and a touch of friendly competition can transform not only Halloween but also our personal and professional lives.

After all, it's not just an event; it's a celebration of the magic that comes from connecting with others and expressing your unique self
