Start your newsletter journey with these 4 tips

You learn from every mistake.

But I believe in one line: Take the plunge, make a mistake, learn from it, and share it with others!

This thought motivated me to share my newsletter journey and learnings with you.

So let's start;

Till January 2022, I had never thought that I would start any newsletter

It happened.

Credit goes to LinkedIn Newsletter Feature, which enabled me to leverage this feature and start this journey.

This journey has taught me many new things and lessons.

One major outcome – is to start another newsletter from my portfolioWord Wizard.

Word Wizard Newsletter

I have summarized 4 tips for launching a newsletter irrespective of the newsletter publishing platform. Considering those, you can start your own newsletter from any platform.

Let's know those tips in this edition:

(1) How to choose a topic

  • Choose a topic based on your interest, passion, or expertise.
  • The newsletter title length could be 4-8 words long, and keep it in a way that attracts your audience's attention in the first place.
  • Idea length of newsletters is 400 – 600 words or 2-3 minutes! But for the Linkedin newsletter, you can increase the word count.
  • Presenting the content in subheading & bullets make it easy to scan the entire content.

(2) Publishing interval

  • Publish biweekly if you have lots of work; Biweekly works perfectly for LinkedIn Newsletter.
  • Publish weekly if you launch it from your own platform.

[I made a mistake when I started Word Wizard by publishing biweekly. I realized that weekly publication is best from my own platform.]

(3) How to plan and schedule

  • Do monthly planning
  • Brainstorm at least 6 ideas relevant to the topic and select 4 in case of weekly or 2 in case of biweekly
  • Create a draft for all monthly editions
  • Use an excel sheet or other software (Notion, Airtable, etc.) to organize everything in one place.
  • Suggested columns: Title/Draft date/Publish date/Status/Caption

(4) Observation & Statistics

  • From LinkedIn Newsletter – you can measure the number of subscribers, repost, and respond.
  • But, from other publishing platforms, you get statistics to understand how audiences respond to your newsletters.
  • Do a monthly analysis and SWOT to understand the newsletter's progress

Value Benefits

You can build a brand around your experience, expertise, and passion

You can build your own audience list or customer database

You can develop a habit of consistency in writing for yourself
