Understand self-discipline

According to Oxford, discipline means "the ability to make yourself do something, especially something difficult or unpleasant."

You already know the meaning of self-discipline, still, I'm reminding it to explain that it is an ability and you can develop this ability. Self-discipline is not a born strength; it can be developed anytime. Self-discipline says that you have to set goals, stick to them, resist temptation, and stay focused on their fulfilment.

Why do you need self-discipline?

What would you get if you develop self-discipline? A human always thinks about benefits first, then how they can get them. Let's first check those benefits which can help you to understand why you need to become self-disciplined:

  • Achieving a small goal makes you HAPPY and brings a shiny smile. That's why you often hear - "Celebrate small wins." Self-discipline can also make you happier and more satisfied.
  • Self-discipline lets you control your emotions, especially negative thoughts, feelings, and actions. It automatically helps in decreasing your STRESS and makes you less anxious.
  • When you do something with focus, it helps to accomplish things in less time. Self-discipline assists you in increasing your potential to achieve your big goals. You learn how to manage distractions as you know the value of FOCUS.
  • Focus and self-discipline are synonyms. Your focus ability can make you a noble decision-maker who makes wise decisions, ask good questions, and resist temptations.
  • Productivity and creativity are the bonus of self-discipline. You become more intrigued to know things which are good for your growth.

3 Simple steps to developing self-discipline habit

You don't want to do things which make you uncomfortable, you feel pain, or you feel it is tough for you. But, it is not like that.

All this happens because you set big things simultaneously and pressure yourself to do that.

Result - Failure to continue any new habit!

That's why you also fail to commit self-discipline.

Don't worry; here are 3 simple ways to build this habit:

First - Baby Steps

Follow the simple baby steps and allows yourself to accept these things. Achieving small goals with baby steps leads you to your destiny.

I was not ready to accept the baby steps and its result. but once I got that with a single move, we could ride the ladder of success; I accepted the baby steps, crawling with joy. To know its recent outcome, read here.

Second - Prioritization

Check out your daily activities, and find out what ones are most important for you. But, pick only 2-3 to finish in your productive hours. When you are prioritizing, consider factors -

  • Important for your works & creating wealth;
  • Important for your growth
  • Important for your networking
  • Important for you to relax

First finish your client's work, then your work. Then give yourself time to reflect, relax, and recharge for the next day.

Third - Reverse Countdown

A reverse countdown is another way to build this habit and increase your focus, creativity, and productivity. This means whenever you feel distracted or uncontrollable - start the reverse countdown.

You started writing habit for 30 minutes a day. You open the document but cannot write as your mind is not in your control, and it is roaming around your social media. Do one thing: Start a reverse countdown ( 5, 4, 3, 2, 1) and start dancing with your fingers on your keyboard. In a few minutes and days, you feel the change yourself!

Final Thought

Self-discipline is an elusive attribute to develop, but once you master it, it can greatly benefit your life on all levels. The changes you experience are not only associated with your daily core management activities but also with your ability to reach your growth goals.
