Staying Motivated
Alright, here’s where it gets good. Today’s episode is inspired by Van, and it’s all about motivation—specifically the two kinds: instrumental (carrot-and-stick style) and intrinsic (doing it because you love it). Here’s what I’ve learned: You need both to win. Van and I were talking about habits, extreme ownership (shoutout to Jocko’s book), and habit stacking. The question we explored was: Why the hell do we stick to certain habits and let others slide?
Here’s the truth: When I love doing something, I’m on it. When I'm crunching numbers, building my pro forma for next year—it's because I enjoy it. It’s a thrill. But pushups? Planks? Not so much. I’ve been lying to myself for months saying I’ll do ‘em. I didn’t. Why? Because talking about a habit makes you feel like you’ve already done it—and that’s dangerous.
So here’s what I did instead.
