SOLAR ECLIPSE SAFETY AWARENESS

On April 8, the moon will align perfectly between earth and the sun, and temporary darkness will sweep across parts of the country in a rare total solar eclipse. In southern Ontario, the timeline for the eclipse runs from 2:04 p.m. to 4:31 p.m., with the total solar eclipse happening at 3:18 p.m. and lasting approximately four minutes.

While the eclipse is sure to be a fascinating spectacle, it does pose potential risks to eyesight if proper precautions are not taken so it is very important that you guard against permanent damage to the eyes. While not all cities will be in the eclipse’s path of totality, the sun's intense radiation can cause severe damage to the eyes even during a partial eclipse.

Dangers of Viewing the Solar Eclipse Without Proper Eye Protection

Looking at the sun during an eclipse can lead to solar retinopathy, permanently damaging the retina's light-sensitive cells. In fact, even a brief look at the partly eclipsed sun can result in harm to the eyes. Symptoms may only surface 12 to 48 hours later and could involve retinal burns, temporary or permanent vision loss, and blurred vision. Unfortunately, once symptoms start, it is usually too late to reverse any resulting damage.

Safety Precautions and Considerations

  • Do not look directly at the sun. Do not look indirectly at the sun using a window or mirror reflection.
  • Where possible, schedule tasks indoors during the eclipse to reduce the likelihood of looking at the sun.
  • If driving, continue as normal and avoid looking at the sun – depending on the sun’s position, use hats/shades/visors that don’t allow any visible light to pass through. Don’t drive wearing eclipse glasses. Turn on your headlights.
  • During the eclipse, the environment will darken like dawn or dusk, so be prepared for distracted drivers/people. Where applicable, ensure adequate lighting and wear high visibility clothing appropriate for low light conditions.
  • Regular sunglasses will not protect your eyes while looking directly at the sun. Cameras, telescopes, binoculars, and translucent shades/visors are also not safe for eclipse viewing.
  • Ensure your eyes are protected at all times by using solar eclipse viewers that meet international standard ISO 12312-2 for safe viewing. Make sure that the glasses are not damaged or scratched before use.
