Still Job Searching Like A 20 Year Old When You're Age 40+?

Still Job Searching Like A 20 Year Old When You're Age 40+?

You're not alone - most age 40+ job seekers still search like 20 year olds.

But employers expect more of you when you're age 40+. You're probably looking for much higher compensation and a higher level position than a 20 year old. A big reason employers are willing to pay higher than entry level salaries is because you can do more than a 20 year old.

So when you job search like a 20 year old, it causes you to lose opportunities for the jobs you want, get low quality interviews, fail to advance, hear that you're overqualified, and attract low ball offers. It grinds your age 40+ job search to a slow crawl.

Here are some of the mistakes you're probably making that make you look like a 20 year old:

  1. Applying With A Standard Resume Template: If you're applying with the same resume (or LinkedIn profile) for each job you've applied to, you give employers a terrible first impression - It looks like you're not even trying. And that's if you manage to get through systems designed to automatically screen out standard resumes.
  2. Not Enough Resume Customization: The average job seeker spends about 15 minutes customizing the average resume they send. It might be enough for a 20 year old, but not for someone with your level of experience, because employers expect more. If you get in front of human eyes, they can tell in seconds that you invested very little time writing your resume for their specific job. When you look like you don't care, why should the employer?
  3. Describing Your Responsibilities/Experience Instead Of Your Impact: Today's employers see many qualified candidates for senior level positions, expecting 5-10 qualified candidates competing for each interview spot. With that many qualified candidates, describing your responsibilities makes you look average. Employers aren't impressed by average, but look for candidates with a track record of significantly impacting their organizations for senior staff, management, and executive positions.
  4. Applying Online: Employers want to see that senior level candidates bring with them a strong network of senior level contacts. Once in a while, employers may be so desperate to fill the position that they hire a senior applicant who applied online. But they give big preference to candidates who networked their way to the job in a very specific way ... a way that almost no age 40+ candidates use, because it's not taught by most career coaches/authors or outplacement firms.

Good thing you can learn to recognize the ways you job search like a 20 year old, how it makes you look unattractive to employers when you're 40+, and what you can do to change it.
