Age 40, 50, and 60+ Job Seekers Can't Help Describing Your Career As Average

Age 40, 50, and 60+ Job Seekers Can't Help Describing Your Career As Average

You just can't help it ... but it's killing your job search when you're over 40.

You've been taught to do this your whole life, it's been reinforced by how you were first taught to write your resume and then by career coaches and outplacement firms.

Even professional resume writers can't help it, because it's how they were taught to write resumes.

Ever get feedback that you're overqualified, or the employer found a better fit for a job you were perfect for? It's because you described yourself as average and failed to prove you were worth the employers perception of your compensation.

You can't help describing your career as average, and you don't even realize it.

Here are 3 ways age 40+ job seekers describe your career as average in resumes and interviews:

  1. Your Goal Is To Appear Qualified: You've been taught that the goal of your resume and interviews are to appear qualified, which can be OK if you're the only qualified candidate. But let's face it, you're not - You're facing way more qualified candidates than an employer can interview. And when a hiring manager sees only qualified candidates, qualified = average. You need a higher goal to overcome job search ageism.
  2. Focus On Responsibilities And Experience: When your resume and interviews focus on responsibilities, it forces an employer to guess if you did your job well, or poorly. Age 40, 50, and 60+ job seekers are so used to describing their career this way, they don't even realize that they're underselling themselves. Why would an employer want to hire you, if you can't make them see you as a success (especially for higher level roles)?
  3. Don't Prove Why You're Worth More To An Employer Than A Less Experienced (And Less Expensive) Candidate: When you're in your 40's, 50's or 60's, employers perceive you'll be more expensive than someone in their 20s or 30s ... because you have had many more annual raises. Since employers don't want to risk paying more for someone who will do less, you need to prove why you're worth greater compensation. You compete against younger, less expensive candidates who can be perceived as a better choice, when you don't prove you're worth a higher cost (even if you're not seeking higher compensation).

Ever get feedback that you're overqualified, or the employer found a better fit for a job you were perfect for? It's because you didn't prove you were worth it.

And it's not just you - These are the top reasons age 40, 50, and 60 job seekers struggle in your job search.

But here's the great news ... you can do something about it.

It's something you can change. And when you learn how to change it, your sob search can move so much faster that you can find your next job by year-end.
