“Am not I
A fly like thee?
Or art not thou
A man like me?”- The Fly
William Blake wrote this poem 200 years ago, maybe he could see connections between Humans and these tiny bugs.
Fruit flies or Drosophila (dew-loving) melanogaster (black-bellied) are undeniably the best model organisms in biology to uncover the mysteries of nature. Model organisms are species that are studied to understand the biology of other organisms, often humans. Fruit flies share 75% of the genes that cause disease with humans, so we have learned a lot and still can learn a lot about human biology by studying fruit flies. For instance, the hippo gene regulates body size in both- any defect in this gene can lead to unchecked growth and cancer in humans. In addition, an impressive arsenal of genetic tools and resources, fully sequenced genome, inexpensive to breed, cheap maintenance, shorter life span, etc, make them best suited for research.
So far, 6 Nobel Prizes have been given for research done using Drosophila- the most recent one for Circadian Rhythms in 2017. People often ask me this question- why fly? Here is an NYT eulogy to the fruit flies and those who have been maintaining thousands of thousands of stocks (to be shipped and used across the globe) even during this pandemic every single day for the greater good.
