The Surprising Benefits of Humming
Nearly eight years ago, Eros Ramazotti was staying in St Raphael Resort and Marina and everywhere he went we could all hear and see him humming. It was indeed intriguing and recently I’ve been reading a lot about breathing techniques and learning about voice control and pitch, and in my learnings have found more and more references to the benefits of simply humming. Many old cultures use humming and chanting as part of their rituals and it’s been fascinating to learn why.
Humming is a simple and often overlooked activity, but it offers a range of surprising benefits for your physical and mental well-being. Whether you're a professional singer or just someone who enjoys humming along to your favourite tunes, so here are some reasons to embrace this delightful habit.
1. Stress Reduction: Humming can be a natural stress reliever. The act of humming triggers the release of endorphins, the body's feel-good hormones, which can help reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. It's a simple way to calm your nerves during a hectic day.
2. Enhanced Breathing: Humming encourages deep, diaphragmatic breathing. When you hum, you naturally take slow, controlled breaths. This can improve your lung capacity, oxygenate your body, and promote relaxation.
3. Vocal Warm-up: If you're a singer or someone who needs to use their voice frequently in business, podcasting or definitely as a parent (!), humming is an excellent vocal warm-up exercise. It helps to gently engage your vocal cords and prepare them for more strenuous activities like singing or public speaking. I’m trying to make it my go-to now before Hotel Talk podcasts!
4. Mood Booster: Humming your favourite tunes can instantly lift your mood. The combination of creating music and evoking memories associated with the songs you're humming can result in a boost of happiness and positivity.
5. Improved Focus: Humming can enhance concentration and focus. It's a form of mindfulness, allowing you to be in the moment and block out distractions. This can be particularly helpful when you need to concentrate on a task or study.
6. Natural Pain Relief: Surprisingly, humming may help alleviate pain. The vibrations produced during humming can stimulate the release of endorphins, which act as natural painkillers. So, the next time you're in discomfort, try humming a little tune.
7. Better Oral Health: Humming can also benefit your oral health. The vibrations created by humming can stimulate blood flow to the gums, potentially improving gum health. It's a simple addition to your oral care routine.

8. Social Connection: Humming can be a great way to connect with others. Whether you're humming in a choir, singing along with friends, or even humming a lullaby to your baby, it can foster social bonds and create a sense of togetherness.
Incorporating humming into your daily routine is easy and enjoyable. You don't need any special equipment or skills—just your voice and a song in your heart. So, the next time you find yourself humming absentmindedly, remember that you're not only enjoying music but also reaping the many benefits it brings to your overall well-being.
