Sustainable Trends In the Textile Industry
The textile industry is undergoing a transformation as new demands from customers and regulations push for more sustainable practices. The demand for natural fibers like cotton, silk, and linen has increased exponentially, driven by a new generation of customers willing to pay more for sustainability. Sustainability, regeneration, climate change, traceability, supply chain management, and circular economy are the overarching themes for the future of the textile industry. However, the industry is expected to see a contraction at least until 2024 due to several factors, including the COVID pandemic, rising inflation, and the Ukraine conflict.
42% of millennials and Gen Z respondents are likely to shop secondhand for items and 75% of millennials are willing to pay more for sustainable brands
The need for sustainability in the textile industry is more pressing than ever before. Clothing manufacturing and transportation produce a large volume of waste and high greenhouse gas emissions, often taking advantage of cheap labor in developing countries. According to a report by the UN, "Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. If nothing changes, by 2050 the fashion industry will use up a quarter of the world's carbon budget."
The ethical fashion market is expected to grow from $7,548.2 million in 2022 to $16,819.0 million in 2032 at a CAGR of 8.6%
The sustainable fashion industry is projected to grow at a CAGR of 9.1% from 2021 to 2028. One of the ways the industry is working to minimize pollution and advance sustainability is traceability, the ability to track and trace the entire life-cycle of the product from raw material and final good to consumption, disposal, and recycling. Traceability can help improve the industry's efficiency, ensuring a constant supply of quality materials and better risk management. Circularity is another critical issue from a sustainability perspective. Recycling a garment helps reduce GHG emissions, save resources, and maximize economic, social, and environmental benefits.
The apparel industry emitted 1.01 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalents in 2019, estimated to increase to 1.6 gigatons by 2030 without drastic action
Sustainable fashion is driven by the adoption of practices that make fashion less threatening to the environment. From the usage of sustainable, regenerative fibers and the prevention of wastage in the textile industry to adoption of minimalism and the provision of long-lasting materials which are environmentally friendly and also safe for workers, several sustainable fashion trends are expected to emerge in 2023. These include thrift fashion, minimalism and capsule wardrobes, regenerative cotton, recycled thread clothing, lower usage of electricity, sustainable and eco-friendly clothing lines, lower water usage, and zero-discharge manufacturing.
The worldwide textile fiber market share in 2021 is dominated by synthetic fibers, with a share of more than 60%. This highlights the need for more sustainable alternatives to synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers are not biodegradable and can have a negative environmental impact.
In conclusion, the textile industry is evolving to meet new demands for sustainability. Companies and organizations that adopt sustainable practices, including traceability and circularity, can help reduce pollution, conserve resources, and minimize their impact on the environment. The demand for sustainable fashion is growing, and companies that prioritize sustainability are expected to succeed in the long run.
