Sustainable fashion: A Landscape Approach to Cotton Sourcing

Sustainable fashion: A Landscape Approach to Cotton Sourcing

A landscape approach is a holistic and integrated approach to land management that considers the interconnected social, economic, and environmental factors within a particular geographic area. This approach involves bringing together diverse stakeholders such as farmers, communities, businesses, NGOs, government agencies, and other actors to jointly develop and implement strategies for sustainable land use.

In the context of sustainable cotton production, a landscape approach involves working with stakeholders across the cotton value chain to promote sustainable practices, protect natural resources, and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. By taking a landscape approach, cotton producers and merchants can address the complex social and environmental challenges facing the cotton sector and contribute to broader sustainability goals.

Some benefits of a landscape approach to sustainable cotton production include:

  1. Improved environmental outcomes: By working together, stakeholders can identify and implement sustainable practices that promote soil health, conserve water resources, reduce pesticide and fertilizer use, and protect biodiversity.
  2. Increased social and economic benefits: A landscape approach can help to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers by promoting fair trade, providing training and capacity-building opportunities, and increasing access to markets.
  3. Enhanced resilience: By promoting diversification and adopting practices that build soil health and conserve water, cotton producers can build resilience to climate change and other environmental risks.

Some activities farmers and merchants implement to participate in landscape approach projects are:

  1. Engage with stakeholders: Reach out to other stakeholders in the cotton value chain, such as farmers, brands, NGOs, and government agencies, to understand their perspectives and identify areas of common interest.
  2. Participate in initiatives: Join landscape approach initiatives, such as the Better Cotton Initiative or the Cotton Made in Africa program, which work to promote sustainable cotton production through a landscape approach.
  3. Adopt sustainable practices: Implement sustainable practices on your farm or in your business, such as reducing pesticide and fertilizer use, conserving water, and promoting soil health.
  4. Share knowledge: Share your experiences and knowledge with other stakeholders to promote best practices and contribute to broader sustainability goals.
  5. Support capacity-building: Provide training and capacity-building opportunities to smallholder farmers to help them adopt sustainable practices and improve their livelihoods.

By taking a landscape approach to sustainable cotton production, cotton producers and merchants can contribute to broader sustainability goals while also promoting the long-term health and viability of the cotton sector.

Look for sustainable cotton that can be traced from the field to the mill, at least.
