The Anatomy of AI

AI,

or Artificial Intelligence,

is the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. It involves creating algorithms and models that enable machines to learn, reason, and adapt over time.

Key components of AI

1. Computer Vision: Image, video and document recognition

2. The Language Processing layer:

  • Natural Language Processing (NLP): unstructured data is converted into a structured data format. Deep Learning and answering questions are also part of NLP.
  • Natural Language Understanding (NLU): a subset of NLP that uses syntactic and semantic analysis of text and speech to determine the meaning of a sentence.
  • Natural Language Generation (NLG): producing a human language text response. This text can also be converted into speech through text-to-speech services.

3. Machine Learning:

  • Deep Learning models use large neural networks that function like a human brain to logically analyze data — to learn complex patterns and make predictions independent of human input.
  • Unsupervised Learning: is suitable for problems that require the algorithms to identify and extract similarities. So that the same inputs can be categorized together.
  • Supervised Learning: Works on existing or given sample data or examples.
  • Reinforcement Learning: Works by interacting with the unknown environment being able to perceive and interpret, take action and learn through trial and error.

4. Robotics: AI provides functions like spatial relations, grasping objects, computer vision, motion control, etc., in robots to make them understand and work on unseen data and situations.

5. Expert Systems Applications: industry-dedicated machine learning and AI that can simulate judgment behaviour, self-improving their performances.

  • Financial services - asset management
  • Mechanical engineering - troubleshooting complex electromechanical tools
  • Healthcare - assisting with diagnoses and finding the cure for Cancer
  • Customer service - schedule orders, route requests
  • Transportation - traffic light control, bus and train schedules
  • Law - Civil case evaluations and assessing product liability

6. Planning and Optimization: Algorithms for finding the best course of action for intelligent agents, autonomous robots, and uncrewed vehicles.

Knowledge Representation and Reasoning: a study of how an intelligent agent's beliefs, intentions, and judgments can be expressed suitably for automated reasoning. One of the primary purposes of Knowledge Representation includes modelling intelligent behaviour for an agent.
