Tech Disruption, a threat to some industries
Have you ever thought about how technology is changing our lives? Not only on a personal matter, but as well the working life.
It wasn’t until some years ago that the tech world started to influence everything that surrounds us, causing the progressive development of the common life.
Regardless of the advantages, for some industries, technology has become a threat, since many fear not finding chances within the IT economy, causing the loss of their importance in their own sector.
The following list is an incomplete but very valuable list, to get an idea about how different industries will be or already have been affected by this tech disruption:
- Journalism / Printed Newspapers. Their sales have been declining steadily, replaced by online media and blogs.
- Libraries and librarians have a new online form. Online bookstores such as Amazon have appeared and therefore the printed books are being replaced by electronic ones.
- Financial sector, especially the banking system, remains in a constant technological transformation with the appearance of new digital platforms which facilitate and simplify banking necessities for the common user. We can see a perfect example at NoviCap platform. The same is happening at payment systems like Apple Pay and PayPal.
- Uber, Blabla Car, and other car-sharing apps are giving traditional taxi and livery companies a run for their money. The same for the hotel and motel industry which are affected by platforms as Airbnb and HomeAway.
- A new revolution is coming to delivery sector with the Drone Technology, Amazon is also trying to bring this project to life, to promote easy delivery door to door.
- The agricultural sector used to make up over 50% of the workforce. Yet, more food than ever is being produced due to the genetically modified products, mechanical pick-up systems, among other factors, in agriculture and food production.
- The increasing and development of Biotechnology, as odd as it may sound; it’s a mayor technological advance. Technology based on biology, working on cellular and biomolecular processes, develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet.
Disruption or Destruction?
It’s commonly believed in today’s society, that technology is a great cause of the destruction of employment, but I wonder... Isn't it rather a transformation of some jobs?
Instead of holding on to the past, people should take advantage of the situation and evolve alongside technology and formulate new jobs that embrace the advances technology has to offer. This way we assure the progress of our society by pulling it further forward.
