Happy Weekend!

Reframing Thanksgiving

A truthful celebration of Thanksgiving begins by acknowledging the complexities of its history while reimagining the holiday as a celebration of shared values that can unite a diverse modern society, in the same way Lincoln presented it to a war-torn country. [read more

In the true spirit of Thanksgiving, John Mallen's blog about the transitoriness of life is very appropriate as a reminder to appreciate what we have during this holiday season fully.

In addition, if you know elderly people who might feel alone during this time, why not reach out to them? If you are an older person, why not reach out to those you love? Time is short, and what we’re here for is to find and give love. To end this on a cheerful note, here is a link to one of my favorite songs by Nat King Cole, “Nature Boy.”

I am Still Alive

by John Mallen

One startling development of a long life is the phenomena of disappearing acquaintances.

I am reminded of the famous line, “Old soldiers never die; they just fade away,” from General Douglas MacArthur’s 1951 farewell address to Congress. My observation refers to personal acquaintances whose physical presence is one day gone. Telephone calls not answered. Social media posts silent. No emails. No proof of life [read more]

Feedback From This Week's Webinar

This week's webinar concluded a four-part series on problem-solving. The group clustered around the word 'uncertainty' and I was blown away from the stories the group produced with only three minutes of writing. John shared this:

Ode to Uncertainty

We were on a reaction force. It was black.  We hustled to pick up two GIs under attack in a village. It was dark. We moved in with several vehicles, dismounted and walked along dark paths. People were standing in doorways looking out and we tried to conceal ourselves alongside thatch walls of small huts. I could see blades slicing through like they were attempting to stab us. Jesus these were just kids in their pj’s!

We got to the GIs. Jesus they were just two teens from the inner city. One was so scared; he could hardly move. We picked him up frozen in position and put him in the back of a truck. We left. No shots were fired.

A double uncertainty, 57 years later. It could have gone differently.  Even so, Why?  What was this for?
