Think Fluoride is safe?
Welcome to Wellness Wednesday where every Wednesday (its in the title!) we take a look at some of the issues that might be affecting our environment, our homes and our health. Some weeks I cover The Healthy Home Show podcast interviews I have had with leading experts in the world of Building Biology, Interior Design, Wellbeing and Healthy Homes. Other weeks, I pull out a subject that I think is worth discussing and/or update you on the latest events at The Healthy Home Therapist in my newsletter.
The idea is to hopefully give you a little more knowledge and awareness to help keep you that bit healthier and more mindful of the toxins and other nasties in our lives that are undermining our health and happiness.
With that in mind, I wanted to update you on a very interesting court case that has been going on for almost a decade. It finally came to a close last month and could have some significant ramifications.
The US court ruling that could change our water
A Landmark Victory Against Fluoride
Big news from across the pond, where a US federal court has ordered the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to revisit its stance on adding fluoride to drinking water. For those of us campaigning for fewer toxins and a healthier environment, this is a significant win!
After seven long years of court battles, the judge ruled that there is "substantial and scientifically credible evidence" that fluoride poses a risk to human health. Studies show that it can lower children's IQs, affect thyroid function, and even impact bone density. The troubling part? The levels of fluoride that can cause harm are alarmingly close to those found in the drinking water of many US communities.
Are We Choosing Cavities Over Child Development?
Critics, including the environmental non-profit Food and Water Watch and the Fluoride Action Network, have long questioned the supposed benefits of fluoride. In court, it was argued that fluoride’s positive impact on tooth decay remains unproven and that we might be trading off children's brain health for a few less cavities—if that benefit even exists at all.
Dr. Mark Burhenne, a functional dentist, adds: "After 75 years of adding this to the water, the last decade of research is showing how fluoride is harming children's brains, even during fetal development."
What About Europe and the UK?
While fluoride levels are supposed to be more strictly regulated across Europe and the UK, the wonderful government announced earlier this year that it wants to further increase fluoride in our drinking water. It does make you wonder—are they physically trying to damage our brain health? Experts have already pointed out that fluoride can harm mitochondria—the little energy factories inside our cells—potentially affecting brain development. The question isn’t whether it’s harmful but rather how much is too much.
Filter That Water, Folks!
Remember, tap water isn’t your only source of fluoride. Baby food, formula, and even your daily cuppa can contribute to your overall intake if you’re not using filtered water. Dentists argue that fluoride in toothpaste has some benefit as long as it’s not ingested—easier said than done, right, mums? And speaking of mums, the court case revealed some mothers had up to 3mg of fluoride per litre in their bodies, despite the water’s limit being just 0.7mg/L. This suggests we might be way underestimating our overall fluoride exposure.
A Tipping Point in Environmental Accountability?
This ruling marks the first time the EPA has been sued over fluoridation, potentially opening the floodgates for other lawsuits against governments and corporations responsible for environmental pollution. With this precedent, industries adding toxins like microplastics to our bodies might be the next to feel the heat.
My thanks go out to the people campaigning for 7 long years in this case. It's too easy to get flattened by these huge agencies that should want to 'do no harm' and have our best interest at heart BUT clearly continue to put profit before people.
What do you think?
Let me know your thoughts in a comment. Do you already filter your water? Have you perhaps swapped to Fluoride-free toothpaste? I would love to know what you think about this subject.

2moA very important issue, Charlie Lemmer - WELL AP Faculty BA (Hons). I also read that the EPA in the U.S. publicly admitted recently that fluoride is toxic, which in my opinion should have been a hint to start reducing or eliminating it from drinking water.
