Thirteen LinkedIn Power Tips for Employees

Thirteen LinkedIn Power Tips for Employees

You may be joining LinkedIn as an employee of a company. Is your company social media savvy—especially about using LinkedIn properly? Many companies are discovering that there is a lot to learn and teach their employees.

Here are some general tips suitable for all employees:

1. Your landscape. Follow your company’s social media feeds and blogs. Read and follow your company’s social media policy. Learn best practices and etiquette for online networking in general. Understand and follow any specific regulations regarding marketing and social media that are particular to your industry, business, or department. Ask your department manager about his or her strategy.

2. Keywords and language. Look at your company website for marketing language that would fit in with your profile and support your brand. Find out if your company shares marketing assets for your use, such as profile examples or sample headlines. Be in alignment with your company’s brand messaging whenever it makes sense for you and your role.

3. Links and rich media. Add the company website and address to the Contact Information section of your profile. Display company-sponsored YouTube videos or presentations on your profile, especially as it relates to your position. (See Chapter 5.)

4. Company logo. Make sure your profile is linked to your company’s LinkedIn company page and displays the company logo. (See mine below and refer again to Chapter 6.)

5. Sharing. Like, comment, and share company-provided content on LinkedIn and elsewhere. Find it in your home feed or go directly to your company’s page on LinkedIn. Some companies will email content directly to employees for sharing, so don’t be afraid to click and share what they send you.

6. External influence. Connect with key industry leaders, clients, and partners. You are the face of your company. Your brand reflects on your company brand! Consider showing support with likes, comments, and @-mentions as appropriate. (See Chapter 13.)

7. Internal influence. Connect with coworkers. Support them by liking, sharing, or commenting on applicable content on LinkedIn. Mention your colleague or customer name with the LinkedIn mention feature for public recognition to your networks.

TIP: Try a LinkedIn Mention. Enter the @ symbol, followed by the name you are mentioning. Select the name in the drop-down.

8. Influencers. If someone on the leadership team in your company is actively publishing articles or posts on LinkedIn, follow him or her and consider liking and commenting. Find other appropriate industry partners or leaders who are influencers to follow.

9. Groups. Join any LinkedIn Groups managed or sponsored by your company. Join groups where your customers spend time. Listen to the conversations for great learning. Engage with helpfulness but not overt salesmanship as a member of a LinkedIn Group. (See Chapter 13.)

10. Introductions. Connect and proactively introduce your coworkers and clients to valuable industry connections. Use LinkedIn search functions to identify the best introduction opportunities.

11. Training. Take LinkedIn or social media training offered by your company. Participate in company social media events or meet-ups.

12. Teamwork. Connect and meet with the marketing professionals at your company to let them know you are an active social media supporter. Let them

know your ideas for great content and how you can help them. Get their advice on how you can enhance your presence or that of the company.

13. Social pro. Recommend and endorse your colleagues and partners. Do this authentically for great work results, and it will be appreciated. (See Chapter 10.)
