Time to let go of control?

I shared in my last newsletter, leaders often step into over-responsibility, taking on too much because they want things done a certain way or fear that their team might fail.

This need for control often stems from past experiences where being thorough, disciplined and action-oriented led to your success.

The problem with holding onto this approach, particularly for leaders, is it can hinder further growth and development. The saying "what go you to this role, won't be enough for you to succeed in this role, or get you to the next one" is relevant here.

It’s essential to find the balance on the responsibility continuum. Instead of doing everything yourself, guide and delegate.

Here are three actions you might take to overcome the challenge of letting go of too much control:

  1. Delegate Effectively: Identify tasks that can be delegated and assign them to team members. Allow adequate time to offer instruction and guidance with handover then trust your team to handle it. Not only with this reduce your workload, it also empowers your team to take ownership and build confidence.
  2. Set Boundaries and Expectations: Take the time to clearly define your role and responsibilities, as well as those of your team members. Establish boundaries around defined roles and help those around you to understand what they are accountable for, reducing the need for you to micromanage.
  3. Embrace a Growth Mindset: Encourage a culture of learning and growth. Accept that mistakes are part of the learning process and use them as opportunities to coach and develop your team. This mindset shift can reduce the fear of failure that often drives the need for control.

Let your team learn from their mistakes, just like a parent allows their child to fail softly and grow stronger. This doesn't mean abandoning support but rather intentionally adjusting the level of responsibility.

Remember, letting go of control helps build resilient, independent, and confident team members who can thrive even in your absence.
