A toast to students with special needs

A toast to students with special needs

Hello Teacher!

The teaching profession is always challenging but oh, so fulfilling. This is especially true when you teach students with special needs. Seeing them experience the joy of learning and empower themselves is indeed one of the best feelings for a teacher.

Students with special needs require thoughtful care and attention. You cannot rely on conventional teaching methodologies while working with them.

You need to identify their unique learning needs and medium and offer them a considerable amount of time to achieve their learning goals.

Today, most classrooms across the world follow an inclusive learning approach based on Universal Design for Learning. This approach suggests that all children, regardless of their abilities, should learn together in age-appropriate classrooms.

This is because all children are equally valued and deserve access to the same opportunities. General educationists and special education teachers work together in such classrooms to provide additional support, boost learning, and foster respect and empathy.

Here are some tips that you can use while teaching children with special needs:

  • Go for an Individual Education Plan according to the needs of each student.
  • Employ Assistive Technology to overcome learning and communication hurdles.
  • Include Augmentative and Alternative communication teaching techniques to express needs, feelings, and ideas.
