Top 5 misconceptions about ServiceNow

There are some common misconceptions that I hear often when discussing ServiceNow with the uninitiated. In no particular order, here are the ones I encounter the most.

ServiceNow is just an IT service management (ITSM) tool

First and foremost ServiceNow is a powerful platform designed to manage any business process. IT Service Management was the first domino to fall. After that incredible success all the other enterprise processes such as HR, Customer Service, Project Management and many more began to gain traction quickly. ServiceNow is the leading enterprise platform. It brings multiple business processes into one unified experience that businesses and stakeholders rely on to do efficient and meaningful work.

ServiceNow is only for large enterprises

Although ServiceNow is often associated with large enterprises, it can also be useful for small and mid-sized businesses. ServiceNow has different offerings and licensing options to cater to businesses of different sizes. Additionally, Managed Service Providers and Business Process Outsources can provide their clients access to a single centralized ServiceNow instance that is configured to keep the end clients separated. This provides economies of scale for all parties involved.

ServiceNow is difficult to use and requires extensive technical knowledge

While ServiceNow is a powerful platform, it is designed to be user-friendly, even for non-technical users. ServiceNow provides abundant resources and training to help users learn the platform. ServiceNow is loved for its no-code, low-code, and pro-code capabilities. You can create very sophisticated applications and business processes without writing any code (no-code). You can extensively customize business logic with low-code. And you can create capabilities never conceived of before with pro-code. ServiceNow is a powerful platform for all users and skill levels.

ServiceNow is expensive

While ServiceNow is not a cheap platform, it is also not as expensive as some people might think. ServiceNow has different pricing models that can be tailored to different business needs and sizes. When you take into consideration the savings from not having to own and manage infrastructure, the smaller team required to administer the consolidated platform, the speed at which your ServiceNow applications and workflows get into production, and the automation capabilities of the platform, the total cost of ownership is much lower than other 'low cost' solutions. As they say, don't step over dollars to pick up pennies.

ServiceNow is only for cloud-based environments

While ServiceNow is cloud-native, it also has options for on-premises deployments, which can be useful for businesses that prefer to keep their data in-house.

These are 5 of the most common misconceptions about ServiceNow. The platform has grown dramatically in adoption and capabilities over the past few years. You may even be a user whether you realize it or not since many of our partners build incredible solutions using ServiceNow for all industries. If you are not a user now, it is very likely you will become one in the future. Then you will come to appreciate the power of the platform that has converted so many of us over the years.
