Tough times dont last : Tough people do!

Tough times dont last : Tough people do!

I recall at the end of last year seeing several social media posts, and even indulging in a few conversations myself, about what a terrible year 2019 had been. It’s one of those semi-frivolous issues that cropped up at most end-of-year gatherings. Well, 2020 just said, “Hold my beer.”

All humour aside, over the last three months, the COVID-19 pandemic has crashed economies, destroyed businesses, and left thousands in mourning for the friends and family members they have lost.

There is no doubt, as a nation we will survive this. Our President, in his last two addresses to the people, has shown fortitude, determination, and clarity. Bold steps are underway to restrict the spread of the virus. Yes, a nationwide lockdown will have an enormous impact on everyone, not least the small to medium-size enterprises.

The nation has no other choice. We have seen the devastation created by not locking down and restricting peoples’ movement. As the medical specialist whose video interview was so widely circulated said, “Staying home is not about your safety — it’s about other people, the ones more vulnerable than you.”

We’re a tough nation, and as the adage says, “Tough times don’t last — tough people do”. And we will emerge from this stronger and, hopefully, more compassionate and more willing to recognise how important it was that we worked together for the benefit of all. This is also a time to re-asses to ensure you protect and preserve your wealth and the wellbeing of those you love.

We are stronger together, and we can do this. There is no quick solution. We can, however, practice patience; we can remain calm, and we can continue to act as responsible citizens. We shall continue to be proactive in serving our clients, while adhering to the measures implemented by the government.

At Carrick, we have decided to implement remote working for the our Wealth Specialists and Operations Team as of Wednesday, 25 March. Carrick’s technological capacity allows us to conduct business and service clients successfully online. We assure all our clients and providers our excellent service will not be compromised. Nor will we compromise on our commitment to the health and safety of our team.

For many, this period will be an extreme test of their emotional and physical wellbeing. Not only are people concerned about contracting the virus, but many feel the added burden of fearing they may unwittingly infect others.

Remember, you are not alone. Reach out to others. You may be isolated at home, but we  do have the means to remain in touch. Perhaps this is a good time to use social media and technology to its best effect: to show each other support, provide assistance, and simply remain connected in a disconcerting, disconnected world.

Good luck and stay safe!

Well, 2020 just said, “Hold my beer.” Lol! As citizens and business leaders, we hope to learn impactful, lifelong lessons from what we are going through. Like the old saying goes; smooth seas never made a skilled sailor. Great post.

Great article Craig. These times don't build character, they reveal it. The strong get stronger and leaders step up. As a business your clients won't remember you for what you did in the good times but how you responded in the bad times.
