Transferring Skills from ballet to the UK Events Industry: A Personal Journey
The world of ballet and the events industry may seem like two vastly different realms, but the skills acquired in one can often be applied to the other. As a former member of the prestigious Royal Ballet Company and School as well as Northern Ballet and Israel Ballet, I have found that the discipline, creativity, and teamwork developed during my dance career have proven invaluable in my transition to the UK events industry. The skills honed in the ballet world have influenced my approach to event planning and management, and they continue to shape my success in this dynamic field.
Discipline and Attention to Detail
Ballet demands unwavering discipline and meticulous attention to detail. Every movement, every step, and every gesture must be executed with precision. This level of discipline has seamlessly transferred to my work in the events industry. From meticulously coordinating logistics to ensuring flawless execution, the ability to maintain focus, meet deadlines, and attend to even the smallest details has become second nature.
Creativity and Artistic Vision
As a dancer, I was immersed in a world of creativity and artistic expression. I learned how to interpret music, convey emotions through movement, and bring stories to life on stage. These artistic skills have proven invaluable in the events industry, where creativity is at the heart of designing memorable experiences. Whether conceptualising a theme, designing event spaces, or curating entertainment, my background in ballet has provided me with a unique perspective and a keen eye for aesthetics.
Teamwork and Collaboration
The Royal Ballet thrives on teamwork, with dancers, choreographers, and musicians working together to create breathtaking performances. Collaboration is a fundamental aspect of the events industry as well. From coordinating with vendors and suppliers to managing diverse teams, the ability to communicate effectively, inspire others, and work harmoniously towards a common goal is crucial. My experience in ballet taught me the value of teamwork, enabling me to build strong relationships and foster a collaborative environment in event planning.

Adaptability and Resilience
The world of ballet is filled with challenges, from physical demands to the pressure of live performances. This environment has cultivated resilience and adaptability, teaching me to remain calm under pressure and find creative solutions to unforeseen obstacles. In the events industry, where unexpected situations and last-minute changes are the norm, the ability to adapt quickly and maintain composure is a valuable asset.
One Chance
The world of ballet is the same as an event. You have one chance to get it right and showcase who you are. Many people compare the events industry to hospitality sectors; however this is one of the fundamental differences in the two industries in my onion. You cannot work on making the best tuna sandwich in the events industry, you have one chance to make to the best and showcase what you have on offer, in hospitality you constantly work on developing that sandwich until you have made it the best. This is why I love events and it reminds me of the theatre, you have a load of people behind the scenes flapping their wings and running at the speed of sound to make the magic happen whilst front of house is a room full of swans gliding away.
The skills acquired in as a dancer have had a profound impact on my career in the UK events industry. The discipline, creativity, teamwork, adaptability, and resilience developed through years of ballet training have seamlessly transferred to event planning and management. By drawing upon my experiences as a dancer, I bring a unique perspective and a set of skills that set me apart in this dynamic and competitive field. Embracing the synergies between ballet and events has not only enhanced my professional growth but also enriched the experiences I create for clients and attendees.
