Transforming Food system in Nigeria: From Smallholder Struggles to Commercial Success
Episode 2: The European Model and the African Struggle
How does Europe, with its smaller population, produce more food than Africa? The answer lies in the structure and scale of their agricultural systems. Europe boasts a higher proportion of commercial farms, leading to greater efficiency and productivity. In contrast, Africa's agricultural landscape remains fragmented, with smallholder farmers dominating the scene.
The prevailing idea that commercialization will harm the environment has kept Africa's agricultural sector less industrialized. Yet, Europe continues to commercialize without significant environmental backlash. Africa's population is growing faster than Europe's, intensifying the pressure on food systems. The fear of environmental degradation should not hinder Africa from pursuing industrialized agriculture. We must ask ourselves, why should Africa lag while Europe advances?
The argument that commercial agriculture will lead to environmental degradation is a excuse we've been sold. Europe has managed to balance commercial agriculture with environmental sustainability, producing more food and achieving higher self-sufficiency rates. Africa must look beyond these outdated fears and embrace modernization to ensure food security, economic growth, and national stability.
